The tower was built to commemorate the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, which overthrew the Sultan of Oman and established a socialist government.

The Revolution Memorial Tower was built in 2014 and contains a small museum showcasing the revolution and the struggle for freedom.

The museum is open daily from 8:00am-5:00pm and the ticket price is 5 usd / 12 000 tzs. Payment is cash only.

The museum can be reached by walking down the street between the largest apartment buildings in all of Zanzibar.
