The village of Lajido lies in one of the centres of the unique lava wine-growing region on the island of Pico.

Centro de Interpretação da Paisagem da Cultura da Vinha

This rather tongue-twisting name refers to an interesting museum of Pico’s wine culture, housed in several buildings in the centre of the village of Lajido.

In our view, this centre is slightly more interesting than the wine museum in Madalena, as it focuses more on the origins of the island’s lava vineyard tradition, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The centre is open every day from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 1.30 pm to 6.00 pm, and admission is free.

Take a stroll through the village

Lajedo also has a lovely promenade with ocean views, which winds its way past traditional wine-growers’ cottages.

About 200 metres from the village centre, you’ll come to some small natural pools in the sea, formed by deposits of lava rocks, where it’s safe to swim.

How to get there

Lajido is situated on the north coast near the airportand is only accessible by car. There are no buses to Lajido.

From the main ring road, follow the brown tourist signs with a vine pictogram, which will take you through the vineyards and straight to Lajido.
