Wisłoujście Fortress
An interesting and relatively little-visited historic site lies on the outskirts of Gdańsk, near the mouth of one of the branches of the Vistula River. Wisłoujście Fortress is one of the best-preserved historic sites in the area, and if you have an hour or two to spare, you should definitely pay it a visit.
The fortress was first built in this strategic location at the river’s mouth as early as 1308; its current, predominantly Gothic form was constructed during the 16th century. At that time, the location was indeed strategic, as the Vistula River’s main channel ran precisely through here.
Today, this branch has become the Martwa Wisla, and the main channel now flows into the sea a few kilometres to the east.
Admission and opening hours
It is open every day from10:00to 18:00.
Admission is 35 pln. Entry is free on Mondays.
How to get there?
Tourist bus routes 600 (from the historic centre) and 606 (from the main railway station) run directly to the fortress, but only at weekends.
On weekdays, it’s best to take a Bolt ride to the museum. The nearest bus stop for routes 106 and 138 is about 1,400 metres away, but the walk takes you through a rather unattractive industrial area.
