Getting around Gdansk
Gdańsk and the two neighbouring towns (Sopot and Gdynia) have good public transport links.
In Gdańsk’s historic centre, you will generally not need any transport. You can easily get around on foot between the main railway station, Długa Street, the Motława waterfront and most of the sights.
You’ll mainly use trams and buses when travelling to the beaches, to Oliwa, to Westerplatte or to the airport. The fastest way to travel between Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia is the SKM train, which operates much like a suburban metro.
Which ticket should you buy?
For most tourists, the following options are the most practical:
| Itinerary | Recommended ticket | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Single journey by tram or bus | ZTM single-journey ticket | 4,80 pln |
| Journey with a change | ZTM for 75 minutes | 6 pln |
| All-day pass valid only within Gdańsk | 24-hour ZTM | 22 pln |
| Gdańsk + Sopot, including the train | 24-hour metropolitan pass for ZTM + trains | 30 pln |
| Gdańsk + Sopot + Gdynia | 24-hour pass for all transport operators | 34 pln |
| Three days across the entire Tri-City | 72-hour pass for all transport operators | 68 pln |
Prices apply to adult passengers. All time-limited tickets are valid for exactly 24 or 72 hours from the first validation, not just until the end of the calendar day.
Our recommendations
If you are staying in the city centre and only make one or two journeys a day, buy single tickets.
The ZTM all-day ticket, costing 22 pln, is good value if you make four journeys involving changes or five separate journeys.
If you’re planning a trip to Sopot, the 24-hour ticket for 30 pln is a good option; it’s valid on Gdańsk trams and buses as well as on SKM and Polregio trains.
If you also want to visit Gdynia in a single day and use the local buses or trolleybuses there, buy a comprehensive metropolitan ticket for 34 pln.
For a three-day stay, the best value for money is the ticket available at 68 pln. It is valid on all trams, city buses, trolleybuses and regional trains within the Tri-City area.

Why are the ticket options so confusing?
Public transport in the Tri-City is operated by several separate systems:
- ZTM Gdańsk – trams and buses in Gdańsk,
- ZKM Gdynia – buses and trolleybuses in Gdynia
- SKM and Polregio – regional trains
- MZKZG – joint metropolitan tickets combining multiple transport operators
Sopot does not have its own transport operator. Buses from both Gdańsk and Gdynia serve the town, and the main railway line runs through the town centre.
A standard ZTM ticket from Gdańsk is not valid on trains, not even when travelling between two stations within Gdańsk. Similarly, a ticket purchased from ZKM Gdynia is not automatically valid on Gdańsk trams.
The exception is metropolitan tickets, which are valid on the transport operators specified on the particular type of ticket.
ZTM Gdańsk tickets
ZTM tickets can be used on all Gdańsk trams and buses, including night services:
- a single journey without changing – 4,80 pln
- 75 minutes with an unlimited number of changes – 6 pln
- 24 hours with an unlimited number of journeys – 22 pln
- up-to-date information atztm.gda.pl/bilety
A single-journey ticket is valid until the final stop of the specific service, but you cannot change services with it. If you need to change services, buy a 75-minute ticket.
Tickets are valid across the entire ZTM network, including Gdańsk routes running to Sopot. However, they are not valid on ZKM Gdynia buses or on trains.
How do I buy a ticket?
The easiest way is to pay by contactless bank card directly on board using the FALA system.
You’ll find FALA terminals on all trams, buses and trolleybuses, as well as on railway platforms. There’s no need to download an app or create an account. You can pay by plastic card, mobile phone or smartwatch.
Quick purchase of a single-journey ticket
You’ll find a small card reader by the vehicle doors. When you tap your bank card against it, a single full-fare ticket for one journey will be purchased automatically.
The following rule applies:
- one card = one ticket
- the machine will not issue a paper receipt
- when asked to show your ticket, present the same card, mobile phone or smartwatch that you used to pay
Do not tap the card again when exiting after purchase. Tapping the same card a second time will invalidate the purchased ticket.
Season tickets and multiple passengers
If you wish to purchase a 75-minute, 24-hour or metropolitan ticket, please use the larger ticket machine with a screen, known as a Falomat.
You can also use Falomat to buy multiple tickets with a single payment card.
This is important, for example, when travelling as a couple, as the simple card reader at the door only allows you to buy one ticket per card.
Mobile app
The most practical options are apps:
- Jakdojade – route search and ticket purchase
- System FALA – journey planning and purchasing city and rail tickets
Metropolitan tickets are also available via the GoPay, moBilet, SkyCash, mPay and zBilet apps.
When purchasing a ticket via an app, please validate it immediately after boarding at the latest. Before travelling by train, the ticket must be validated before boarding the train.
Paper tickets
Paper tickets are sold at ticket machines at major stations, in customer service centres and at some newsagents.
Once you have boarded, validate your ticket once in the validator. For 24-hour or 72-hour tickets, the validity period begins from the moment of first validation.
Metropolitan ticket
Metropolitan tickets are the simplest option when travelling between several cities, but please check carefully which transport operators the specific ticket is valid for.
Official information and current prices can be found on themzkzg.org website.
24 hours without trains – 24 pln
Applies on board:
- ZTM Gdańsk
- ZKM Gdynia
- MZK Wejherowo
Not valid on SKM or Polregio trains.
For most tourists, this option is not particularly convenient. This is because the train is significantly faster than city buses between Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia.
24 hours: trains + one city transport operator – 30 pln
Valid on SKM and Polregio trains and also on one of the city transport operators.
When visiting Gdańsk and Sopot, choose the SKM/Polregio + ZTM Gdańsk option.
With this pass, you can travel by train to Sopot and make unlimited use of trams and buses in Gdańsk on the same day.
24 hours for all transport operators – 34 pln
Valid:
- on SKM and Polregio trains
- on ZTM Gdańsk trams and buses
- on ZKM Gdynia buses and trolleybuses
- on MZK Wejherowo buses
Buy this option if you want to travel throughout the Tri-City in a single day.
72 hours for all transport operators – 68 pln
Valid for three full days on all the transport services listed above. For a classic three-day stay including visits to Sopot and Gdynia, this is the simplest option.
How much do individual tickets for SKM trains cost?
Trains have their own fare structure, and the price usually depends on the distance travelled.
For the most common tourist journeys, two special zone-based offers are particularly important:
- a ticket for the Gdańsk and Sopot area – 8,50 pln
- a ticket covering the entire Tri-City, i.e. Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia – 12,50 pln
For shorter journeys between a few stations, the ticket machine may offer a cheaper distance-based fare.
You can buy a ticket:
- from a ticket machine at the station
- via the FALA system (using your own contactless card)
- via the KOLEO app
- at the SKM ticket office
Please note: long-distance trains
In addition to SKM, Polregio trains and PKP Intercity long-distance services also run between Gdańsk and Gdynia.
Metropolitan tickets are valid on SKM and Polregio trains within the designated area, but are not valid on PKP Intercity trains. You should therefore always check which operator is listed for the service before boarding.
Search for connections
We recommend the Jakdojade app for planning your journeys.
It shows trams, buses, trolleybuses and trains, takes current service disruptions into account and allows you to buy a ticket straight away for most services.
You can also track the current locations of trams and buses on the ZTM Gdańsk map.
During major construction work, the routes of some services change, so it is not advisable to rely solely on an older map or the service number. ZTM itself refers passengers to the Jakdojade route finder.

Trams in Gdańsk
The tram is the easiest way to get around Gdańsk. The network is straightforward, the tracks are always easy to spot and the route system is not at all complicated: there are only 9 tram routes in total running through Gdańsk.
The following are particularly useful for tourists:
- Tram number 3 to Brzeźno Dom Zdrojowy beach
- Tram number 2 towards Jelitkowo Beach
- other routes between the main railway station, Wrzeszcz and Oliwa
The trams are generally modern, but you may occasionally come across some old Soviet-era trams. The stops are clearly signposted and you’ll always find a timetable there.
You can board the tram through any of the doors. Validate your paper ticket when you first board; purchase or activate your electronic ticket via FALA or the mobile app.
The intervals between services on individual routes are quite long, ranging from 15 to 20 minutes. However, on most routes, several services run together.
ZTM buses in Gdańsk
City buses in Gdańsk are operated by the ZTM transport company and are cream and red in colour. They serve every part of the city, including the historic centre (route 100). As with trams, most routes run at intervals of between 15 and 30 minutes.
The routes most frequently used by tourists are also routes 122and 210, which connect the airport, Wrzeszcz railway station and the seaside resort of Sopot (or Główny railway station), as well as routes 106 and 138.
You can always use any of the doors when boarding and alighting. You must validate your paper ticket in the validator inside the vehicle, but only the first time you use it. You do not need to validate the ticket again after that.
Boats and ‘water trams’
Boats known as ‘Tramwaj wodny’ are not part of Gdańsk’s public transport system, and neither ZTM tickets nor metropolitan travelcards are valid on them.
These are seasonal tourist cruises operated by Żegluga Gdańska. Services are subject to the season, weather conditions and sufficient passenger numbers.
The following routes are currently available:
| Route | One-way | Return |
| Gdańsk – Westerplatte | 80 pln | 100 pln |
| Gdańsk – Sopot | 105 pln | 160 pln |
| Gdańsk – Hel | 120 pln | 180 pln |
You can find the exact timetables on the websitezegluga.pl/cruises.
The crossing to Westerplatte takes approximately 40 minutes and departs from the Green Gate. The journey to Sopot takes around 50 to 60 minutes, and to Hel approximately 2 hours.
The SKM train is much faster and cheaper for the journey to Sopot. You should therefore treat the ferry as a day trip and a sightseeing cruise, rather than as regular public transport.
Conversely, the boat trip to Westerplatte is an interesting alternative to the bus. On the way, you’ll see the harbour, the shipyards, Wisłoujście Fortress and other parts of the city that you wouldn’t see from the road.
For some services marked with the letter R, departure is not guaranteed. The ferry will only sail if there are enough passengers. Furthermore, for services to Sopot and Hel, online booking may not be available, and tickets are sold at the harbour ticket offices.
MEVO bike-sharing
Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia share the MEVO bike-sharing scheme. Both standard and electric bikes are available, which can be unlocked via a mobile app after scanning a QR code.
Bikes are particularly suitable for:
- cycling along the coast between Brzeźno, Jelitkowo and Sopot
- a ride through Regan Park
- getting around the flat parts of the city
The basic rate is 0,15 pln per minute for a standard bike and 0,30 pln per minute for an e-bike. A registration fee of 10 pln is payable before first use.
A 48-hour subscription is also available for tourists at 59 pln, which includes a daily time limit for both standard and electric bikes.
You can find the current price list here:rowermevo.pl.
Night-time transport
There is no fixed time when daytime services finish. Some trams and buses finish around 11 pm, whilst others run until almost midnight.
At night, transport is provided by 13 bus routes marked with the letter N:
N1, N2, N3, N4, N5, N6, N8, N9, N14, N16, N56, N78 and N89.
The most important route for visitors is the N3, which connects the airport with the main railway station and the centre of Gdańsk. The same tickets are valid on this route as on regular daytime services.
Night services run much less frequently, so always check the specific departure time on Jakdojade before travelling.
Taxis, Bolt and Uber
The Bolt, Uber and Free Now apps are available throughout the Tri-City. For tourists, they’re usually easier to use than traditional taxis, as you can see the pick-up location, the approximate fare and the driver’s details before booking.
Before each journey, we recommend comparing at least Bolt and Uber. Prices vary according to demand, and the same route can be significantly more expensive or cheaper depending on the app.
Approximate prices
Prices are dynamic, but based on Bolt’s indicative price list, you can expect to pay approximately the following amounts:
| Route | Approximate price |
|---|---|
| Airport – Gdańsk Główny | 44 pln |
| Airport – city centre at Brama Wyżynna | 44 pln |
| Airport – Sopot | 41 pln |
| Airport – Gdynia Główna | 48 pln |
| Gdańsk Główny – Brzeźno Beach | 34 pln |
| Gdańsk Główny – Sopot | 43 pln |
| Gdańsk city centre – Wrzeszcz | 29 pln |
These are indicative prices only. On Friday or Saturday evenings, in bad weather, following the arrival of several flights, or during major events, the actual price may be higher. You will always see the current price in the app before confirming your booking.
A taxi or Bolt is particularly good value when travelling in a group of three or four people. For example, a journey from the city centre to Brzeźno Beach costs approximately 9 pln per person when the fare is split between four passengers.
Conversely, between Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, the SKM train is usually faster and significantly cheaper for one or two passengers.
A standard taxi
You can hail a standard taxi at a taxi rank, book one by phone or via the Free Now app.
The city sets maximum taxi fares for journeys within Gdańsk:
- basic fare – maximum 9 pln,
- daytime rate from Monday to Saturday between 6.00 and 22.00 – maximum 4 pln per kilometre
- night-time rate, Sundays and public holidays – maximum 6 pln per kilometre
- Waiting charge – maximum 50 pln per hour
Individual taxi services may charge less, but not more. The price list must be clearly displayed in the vehicle.
You can find the current rules and maximum fares on the city’s official website:
When travelling to Sopot or Gdynia, you are leaving the Gdańsk area and a higher intercity fare may apply. For longer journeys, it is therefore usually safer to book a ride via an app, where you know the price in advance.
When should I choose a taxi or Bolt?
I would mainly use Bolt, Uber or a taxi:
- when arriving or departing early in the morning or late in the evening
- when travelling in a group of three or four people
- with a lot of luggage
- when travelling to more remote beaches
- when returning from a restaurant or bar
- when travelling by public transport would involve several changes
However, for journeys between the centres of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, the SKM train is almost always a more practical option.
What’s the easiest way to get around?
For a typical stay, I would do the following:
- walk through the historic centre
- pay for individual journeys around Gdańsk by card via FALA
- if you’re making more than four journeys a day, buy a 24-hour ZTM ticket
- Take the SKM train to Sopot and Gdynia
- For a three-day stay with trips around the whole Tri-City, buy a metropolitan ticket for 68 pln
- Use the ferry mainly for trips to Westerplatte or Hel
Fares, routes and ticket sales methods are subject to change.
