Where to stay in Gdansk
If you’re visiting Gdańsk for the first time and want to focus on exploring the city, stay in the historic centre or on Wyspa Spichrzów, the Granary Island.
All the main sights, the waterfront, restaurants and cruise ship terminals will be within walking distance.
A cheaper and very convenient transport option is the area around Gdańsk Główny main station. We recommend Wrzeszcz for longer stays or frequent trips to the airport, whilst Brzeźno and Sopot are best chosen mainly for the beach.

Don’t want to trawl through dozens of hotels? From the options below, these would be my top picks:
- B&B HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – the best choice if you’re looking for a modern and usually affordable hotel right in the centre
- Hampton By Hilton Gdańsk Old Town – the most versatile hotel for a first visit to Gdańsk, just a few steps from Długa Street
- GRANO HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – best for families, couples and anyone who wants a swimming pool, sauna and spa facilities right in the city centre
Where to stay in Gdańsk
Although Gdańsk’s tourist attractions are concentrated within a small area, the city and its immediate surroundings can still be divided into four main areas where you can find accommodation.
The best areas for accommodation
| Area | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Historic Centre | First-time visitors, sights, restaurants | Higher prices and occasional noise |
| Spichrzów Island | Modern hotels, the waterfront, couples | More expensive parking |
| Gdańsk Główny | Trains, day trips, lower prices | Less romantic surroundings |
| Wrzeszcz | Airport, longer stays, shopping | You’ll need to commute to the city centre |
| Brzeźno | A peaceful beach holiday | About 30 minutes to the centre |
| Sopot | Beaches, restaurants and nightlife | Not located directly in Gdańsk |
The historic centre – best for a first visit
Most travellers use the term ‘Old Town’ to refer to the entire historic centre, although the most famous sights are actually mainly located in the Główne Miasto district, or ‘Main Town’.
If you’re staying in this area, you won’t need public transport for most of your stay.
We particularly recommend the historic centre:
- on your first visit to Gdańsk
- for a weekend break
- if you want to walk to restaurants and bars in the evening
- if you’re travelling without a car
- if you don’t want to waste time commuting

The best hotels in the historic centre
- Hampton by Hilton Gdańsk Old Town – excellent value for money, quality and location right on Długa Street. In our view, the safest all-round choice
- B&B HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – a new, modern hotel ideal for travellers who mainly want a good bed, air conditioning and a central location
- IBB Hotel Gdańsk – one of the best locations in the city, right on Długi Targ Square
- Radisson Blu Hotel Gdańsk – a more elegant 5* option right on Długi Targ
Wyspa Spichrzów – modern hotels by the waterfront
Granary Island lies on the other side of the Motława River, opposite the historic centre. Just a few decades ago, it was mainly home to the ruins of old warehouses; today, it is a modern district full of hotels, apartments, restaurants and promenades.
In my view, it’s the best compromise between location and comfort.
- PURO Gdańsk Stare Miasto – the best design hotel in the city centre. Particularly suitable for couples and shorter city breaks
- Holiday Inn Gdańsk – City Centre – a modern hotel right by the river, with a great location and a rooftop bar
- GRANO HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – a modern hotel with an indoor swimming pool, a spa and family rooms
- Novotel Gdańsk Centrum – particularly practical for families and those travelling by car, as it has its own paid car park and rooms with a sofa bed
The PURO is situated directly on Granary Island, not far from the marina; the Holiday Inn is approximately 450 metres from Długi Targ; and the Novotel is about a five-minute walk from the historic centre.

The area around the main railway station – convenient and often cheaper
The area around Gdańsk Główny station is ideal if you’re arriving by train, planning trips to Sopot, Gdynia or Malbork, or if you want to stay close to the centre but not right on the busiest streets.
It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the station to the start of the historic centre, and about 15 minutes to Długi Targ.
- Scandic Gdańsk – the best choice if travelling by train; it’s practically opposite the station
- Hotel Wolne Miasto Old Town Gdańsk – a simpler 3* hotel between the station and the main sights
- Mercure Gdańsk Stare Miasto – a classic large hotel with views from the upper floors, also good for those travelling by car
Scandic is about a two-minute walk from the main station, whilst Hotel Wolne Miasto is approximately 600 metres from the station.

Wrzeszcz – a more affordable base with excellent transport links
Wrzeszcz is a modern business district situated between the historic centre, the airport and the sea. Here you’ll find shopping centres, casual restaurants, offices and one of Gdańsk’s most important railway stations.
Direct trains run from Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station to the airport, Sopot and Gdynia. You can reach the historic centre by train in about 5 minutes.
Wrzeszcz makes sense:
- for longer stays
- if you travel frequently by train
- if you have an early morning departure or a late arrival
- if you want to save money compared to the historic centre
- if you prefer a normal neighbourhood to the tourist centre
However, I wouldn’t choose Wrzeszcz for a classic weekend focused solely on sightseeing, unless the price difference compared to the city centre is significant.
- Focus Hotel Premium Gdańsk – a modern hotel near Wrzeszcz railway station
- Smart Hotel – a simpler and often cheaper option in the Garnizon area
Brzeźno – peaceful accommodation right by the beach
Brzeźno is the best choice if you want to stay by the sea whilst remaining within Gdańsk itself.
The neighbourhood has a wide sandy beach, a pier, a coastal promenade and a direct tram link to the city centre. However, the tram journey takes around 30 minutes, so we do not recommend Brzeźno for a short weekend break.
The best choice is the Hotel Lival, which is just a few steps from the beach. The rooms offer sea views, and a coastal walking and cycling path runs right past the hotel.

Sopot – beach, restaurants and nightlife
Sopot is a separate town approximately 12 km from the centre of Gdańsk. Choose it mainly if you want to combine exploring the Tri-City with a beach holiday.
Here you’ll find a long beach, the famous wooden pier, spa hotels, restaurants and a much livelier evening atmosphere than in Brzeźno.
You can reach the centre of Gdańsk by SKM train in about 20 minutes. However, if you mainly want to visit the sights in Gdańsk every day, it will be more convenient to stay right in the centre.
- Hotel Eureka – excellent value for money and a great location, just about 100 metres from the beach
- Sheraton Sopot Hotel – a luxury hotel by the pier and the beach
- Sofitel Grand Sopot – a historic 5* hotel right by the sea
The Hotel Eureka is situated approximately 100 metres from the beach and also offers family rooms, a spa and private parking.
Best hotels for those travelling by car
Parking in the historic centre is expensive and has limited capacity at some hotels. Therefore, always check before booking whether a space can be reserved in advance.
- Novotel Gdańsk Centrum – its own paid car park and good access from the main roads
- GRANO HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – private parking right in the centre
- B&B HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town – a central hotel with private car park
Best hotel near the airport
If you have an early morning departure or a very late arrival, the Hampton by Hilton Gdańsk Airport is the most convenient option.
The hotel is approximately 200 metres from the terminal, so there’s no need to book a taxi.
However, we do not recommend a hotel near the airport for a standard stay. You would be making unnecessary daily journeys into the city centre.
Apartment or hotel?
There are a large number of private apartments in the historic centre. These are often a good option for families and groups of three or four travellers, particularly for stays of several nights.
Before booking an apartment, check:
- whether the accommodation has a traditional reception
- whether there’s a facility for storing luggage after check-out
- the final price, including the cleaning fee
- whether the windows face directly onto a busy pedestrian street
For a stay of one or two nights, I’d usually opt for a hotel. In my view, the reception, breakfast and luggage storage facilities more than make up for the slight difference in price.

Accommodation prices in Gdańsk
Prices vary significantly depending on the time of year and the day of the week. The summer season, Advent weekends, New Year’s Eve and major city events have the greatest impact.
As a rough guide, you’ll pay:
- around 350 pln for a basic hotel outside the peak season
- around 450 pln fora well-reviewed 3* or 4* hotel in the city centre
- around 750 pln for the same hotel during summer weekends
- around 1 000 pln for a 5* hotel, depending on the time of year
Accommodation is usually cheapest in January, February and November. Expect the highest prices in July and August, during Advent and at the turn of the year.
In 2026, Gdańsk also charges a local tax of3,46 pln for each night or part thereof to visitors staying in the city for more than one day. The tax is usually paid directly to the accommodation provider.
How can you get a better price?
Once you know your travel dates, we recommend booking a well-reviewed hotel with a free cancellation option, if such a rate is available.
You can then check the price again from time to time. If the hotel reduces its rates, you can make a new booking and cancel the original one free of charge in accordance with its terms and conditions.
In summer, don’t leave booking hotels in the city centre, Brzeźno and Sopot until the last minute. The best-located rooms sell out sooner than those in more remote and lower-rated hotels.
