Motlawa Embankment
In the historic centre of Gdańsk, the Motlawa River splits into two branches, creating beautiful scenery dotted with monuments, pubs and places to relax along the riverfront.
The most picturesque part can be found right in the city centre, in an artificial branch of the river known as the Nowa Motlawa. On both sides, you can stroll along the beautifully restored, pedestrian-only quays and admire a host of interesting buildings.
Sights and attractions
Most of the ancient monuments are to be found on the western embankment, closer to the historic centre. The entire area around the Motlawa is dominated by one of Gdańsk’s iconic structures, Stary Żuraw, a historic crane used for loading ships.
The waterfront is separated from the historic centre by a series of magnificent gates and arcades, which are among Gdańsk’s most famous landmarks.
- The Green Gate (Brama Zielona)– this ornate building, inspired by Antwerp Town Hall, dates from 1568 and connects the waterfront to the main square, Długi Targ, via four passageways
- St Mary’s Gate (Brama Mariacka) –the largest and most prominent entrance to the historic centre is built of red brick and dates from 1457
- Market Gate (Brama Straganiarska)– this gate, dating from 1481, resembles an armoured fortress
Along this side of the waterfront, you will also find around five other gates, mostly dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries.
On the other side of the Motława River, however, you can admire traditional half-timbered houses, which gradually give way to the north, making way for modern buildings tastefully constructed in the original style of historic Gdańsk.
Accommodation on the waterfront
The area around the Motlawa River is the most beautiful neighbourhood in which to stay. Here you’ll find both international hotels and private apartments. Although prices are higher than elsewhere in the city, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views and the fact that most of the sights are just a few minutes’ walk away.
- Hotel Hanza ****– a cosy and stylishly furnished smaller hotel offering great rates of around 62 eur per night for a twin room
- Hilton Gdańsk ***** – a classic five-star hotel situated at the northern end of the waterfront, offering reasonable rates of around 107 eur
- Radisson RED *** – a budget hotel from a well-known chain, it enjoys a superb location at the tip of the island and the stylish setting of a former shipyard, with prices around 78 eur per night
