Długi Targ

Dlugi Targ

Długi Targ, or Long Market, is the heart of historic Gdańsk and one of the most popular tourist attractions.

At one end, it leads onto Długa Street, which runs towards the main railway station; at the other end, it passes through the Green Gate onto the banks of the Moltawa River.

The square was founded in the 13th century as the main commercial district of what was then Gdańsk. Over the centuries, Długie Square has become the wealthiest and most expensive part of the city, a fact that remains true to this day.

Restaurants, the Town Hall and Neptune’s Fountain

The whole square is lined with dozens of restaurants, cafés and wine bars, but be prepared for prices that are considerably higher than elsewhere in the city.

The western end of the square is dominated by the historic town hall with its tall, slender tower, which currently houses the Gdańsk Museum.

In the central part of Długi Targ stands the historic Neptune Fountain from the 17th century, which ranks among Gdańsk’s most famous landmarks. It is regarded as a masterpiece of Mannerist Rococo.

Accommodation on Długi Targ

Długi Targ is the heart of Gdańsk, and if you want to stay right in the historic city centre, this is where you should look for hotels.

Right on the square, you’ll find two high-quality hotels with prices ranging from 70 eur to 78 eur per night for a double room:

The slightly cheaper Hotel Artus ***, with prices around 58 eur , is located about 150 metres from the square.
