Templo Mayor
Templo Mayor is one of the most important historical monuments in Mexico City.
It was here that the main temple of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán was located, on the foundations of which today's Mexico City was later built.
Today, you can explore the extensive archaeological site right in the heart of the city just steps from the Zócalo and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

What is Templo Mayor?
Before the Spanish arrived in Mexico, the main temple of the Aztec Empire stood on this site.
After the conquest of the city in 1521, the temple was largely destroyed and its stones were used to build a new colonial city. For several centuries, its existence was almost forgotten.
It was only in the 20th century that the remains of the temple complex were discovered during construction work, and today they form one of the most important archaeological sites in the whole country.
What will you see here?
- The remains of the main Aztec temple
- the archaeological excavations of the former Tenochtitlan
- stone reliefs and sacrificial altars
- the famous stone of the goddess Coyolxauhqui
- an extensive museum with thousands of artifacts
The ruins themselves are interesting, but for us, the museum is at least as important in helping us understand the significance of the entire site.
Entrance fees and opening hours
The viewing platform for the outdoor portion of the excavations is open for free all day.
But if you're interested in history, head down to the underground museum where you'll see a lot more archaeological relics.

- 🕗 9-17 daily except Mondays
Is it worth visiting Templo Mayor?
✅ Yes, if:
- you are interested in Aztec history
- you want to understand the origins of Mexico City
- you want to visit the historic center
❌ More likely not if you:
- you are not interested in archaeology in general
- you have very limited time in the centre
- you're looking more for "wow" and "instagram" spots
💡 Alternative:
If you want to see much more extensive remains of pre-Columbian civilizations, head to Teotihuacán. Templo Mayor is historically extremely significant, but the scale of Teotihuacán cannot compare.
