Palacio Postal

Palacio Postal

Palacio Postal is one of the biggest surprises of Mexico City's historic centre.

From the outside it looks like just another historic building, but inside you'll find one of the most beautiful interiors in the city.

Although it still serves as the main post office, visitors can enter the extensive and surprisingly interesting museum.

We were most impressed by the palace's beautiful staircase and main lobby.

What you'll see here

  • the magnificent marble staircase
  • richly decorated interiors
  • Historic bulkheads
  • Museum of stamps, coins and other postal relics
  • the still functioning main post office

The biggest surprise is the interior. While from the outside the building fits in with the other historic buildings downtown, inside it looks more like a palace than a post office.

Admission and opening hours

To visit the museum, as well as the staircase, you have to pay admission.

You can't see the staircase and the main lobby with its beautiful glass entrance very well, and you can't take any photos at all without paying the entrance fee.

  • 💰50 mxn (cash payment only)
  • 🕗 10-17 daily except Mondays

Our tip

If you're visiting Bellas Artes, pop in here on the way.

The Postal Palace is literally a few meters away and a visit.

For us, it was one of the most pleasant unplanned surprises in Mexico City.

Initially I didn't even want to go inside, but in the end I'm glad my girlfriend convinced me.

We spent about 30 minutes in the museum, which has 3 floors.

My recommendation: the museum also has a gift shop with souvenirs, postcards and stamps. Write the postcard straight away and send it from here. Next to the museum is a regular post office with mailboxes. I kept the postcard in my backpack, thinking I could find the mailbox anywhere, and ended up finding it when I left Cancun airport.
