KYOCERA Museum of Art
Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art is the main museum of modern and contemporary art in Kyoto. It is located in the Okazaki district, just a few minutes' walk from Heian Shrine.
The building combines historic architecture from 1933 with a modern extension from 2020. The result is a very photogenic interior and exterior that is well worth a visit even without a deep interest in art.
Architecture worth a visit
Even without knowledge of current exhibitions, the museum is worth a visit for the building itself.
The historic part looks monumental, while the modern extension offers open galleries, wide staircases and clean lines.
Moreover, the Okazaki district is one of the most cultivated parts of the city.
What exhibitions and collections to see here
Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art doesn't have one permanent iconic exhibition like some national museums. The program is a combination of:
- temporary exhibitions of contemporary Japanese and international art.
- design and architecture
- traditional Japanese art in a modern context
- photographic and multimedia projects
Part of the building is dedicated to a collection of modern art from the Kansai region, while other galleries host rotating thematic exhibitions.
It is therefore a good idea to check the current programme before visiting - the content can vary considerably from season to season.

For whom the museum is interesting
- Lovers of modern and contemporary art
- visitors who have already seen the main historical monuments
- travellers looking for a quieter indoor programme (perhaps during the rain)
- photographers (the interior of the building is very photogenic)
But if you're coming to Kyoto primarily for the temples, the museum may be more of an add-on than a priority.
