The historic Kalamaja district is one of the best preserved areas with original wooden architecture.

Kalamaja began to develop at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when as a district between the harbour and the Old Town it was mainly used to house harbour workers and fishermen.

Stylish apartments in Kalamaja

From the second half of the 20th century onwards, the neighbourhood gradually fell into disrepair and was still one of the ugliest neighbourhoods in Tallinn in the 1990s.

Since the turn of the millennium, however, Kalamaja has gradually been renovated and is now one of the most peaceful and beautiful neighbourhoods in the Estonian capital.

The traditional different coloured wooden houses have been preserved and many streets have been converted into pedestrian zones.
