Fern Grotto, loosely translated as Fern Cave, is one of Kauai's most famous attractions. The lava rock cave, formed by ancient volcanic activity, impresses with its walls covered with lush green shoots of ferns and other tropical plants that resemble natural living stalactites.

The cheapest accommodation on Kauai

The cave resembles a natural amphitheater brimming with greenery and colorful plants and looks like a gateway to an incredible world of fairy tales. The plants are constantly irrigated by dozens of miniature waterfalls cascading down the cave walls.

How to get there

Fern Grotto is accessible only by the Wailua River. A small wooden dock has been constructed, from which a short walkway leads to the caves. Small motor boats from Smith's Boats run from the village of Wailua to the cave, and the trip will take about an hour and a half in total.

One round-trip ticket, which includes admission to the cave, costs 35 usd, and you can find detailed information at smithskauai.com/fern-grotto.
