Poipu

The smaller resort town of Poipu, spelled Po'ipu in Hawaiian, is a popular beach destination in the very south of Kauai, which is much more civilized and offers a more classic beach vacation compared to the north shore.
Beaches and swimming
Poipu has a beautiful rugged coastline, which also makes swimming here safer than in the north of the island. There aren't as strong undercurrents and currents and the waves don't get as big in the coves with beaches. There are 2 main beaches in Po'ipu:
- Poipu Beach - 350 meters long curved beach in a beautiful bay divided into two parts by a sandy peninsula. There are ideal conditions for less experienced swimmers, you can safely snorkel in the enclosed bay and the exotic atmosphere is completed by a palm grove right on the beach. There is a snack stand or a surf shop with equipment rental. Poipu Beach is a popular spot, so expect to be sure you won't be alone.
- Shipwreck Beach - about 400 metres long on the outskirts of the town, it's more natural with a few rocks, it's more open so there are bigger waves and more depth, but you'll definitely have more privacy.
The small town of Poipu
Poipu is mainly made up of villas, hotels and holiday cottages, but you'll also find a large supermarket, beach and surf equipment rental and shops, as well as a few snack bars and restaurants.
In short, a nice little resort where you can spend a relaxing day by the sea.
Accommodation
In Poipu you can stay in many holiday apartments, which are worthwhile if you are travelling in a group of people, or in some beautiful resorts of the well-known multinational resorts Sheraton or Mariott. However, the rates here are the highest of all Kauai and a night for 2 starts from 366 eur.
How to get there
Poipu is very easy to reach by car. From Highway 50, which runs along Kauai's south and west sides, turn onto Highway 520, which takes you to the beaches, where there is free parking. From Lihue Airport, Poipu can be reached in 24 km.
It is also easily accessible by bus line 30, which runs hourly from Lihue.
