One of the most beautiful, yet very little visited beaches is definitely Kauapea on Kauai's north shore.

It combines a wild rocky shoreline with a peaceful quiet area with fine golden sand and comfortable access to the sea.

Swimming and beach facilities

Kauapea Beach is one of the most diverse in all of Kauai. The eastern part is partly rocky, and the black rocks create beautiful contrasts with the golden sand and blue sky; the sea is rougher here and swimming is quite dangerous.

On the other hand, the western part of the beach is beautifully flat, without rocks and just enough to cover the bay. The sea here is calm and relatively shallow suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

  • The surface of the beach - fine golden sand
  • Entrance to the water - gradual and without stones on the western side, rocky on the eastern side
  • Length of the beach - 1 km
  • Width of the beach - 50 metres
  • Sunbed rental - no
  • Toilets and showers - no
  • Catering - no
  • Shops - no

Kauapea beach is located in a beautiful natural setting under a wooded overhang, giving the impression of absolute solitude.

As a result, relatively few tourists head here and you can have the beach practically to yourself even in the summer season. You can drive to a distance of about 200 metres from the beach.

Kilauea Lighthouse

On a peninsula rising on a cliff above the eastern end of the beach, you can visit the romantic little white Kilauea Lighthouse from 1909.

The area around the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the ocean and Kauai's jagged north shore.

How to get there

Kauapea Beach is accessible only by car.

Take the main circular road number 56. In the direction of Lihue, you'll pass the village of Kilauea and about 400 meters past the village, turn right onto Kalihiwai Road and after another 50 meters or so, turn right again onto a smaller asphalt road that takes you almost to the beach.
