Choosing the right location for a hotel in Cancún is very important, and I myself spent several days on end thinking about it.

Different parts of the city vary significantly in terms of the type of beach, the nature of the sea, the availability of restaurants, and whether you can even get anywhere without a taxi.

For most travellers, I’d recommendthe Zona Hotelera if you want to stay right in Cancún.You’ll be right by the beach, there are buses running along the main street, and from some parts you can walk to restaurants, shops and nightclubs.

If you want to spendyour entireholiday within a large resort, choose Costa Mujeres.

Conversely, we recommend the centre of Cancún mainly because of the low prices and the ADO bus station. The centre isn’t really suitable for a traditional seaside holiday.

During the standard off-peak season, a basic double room in the city centre costs from approximately 62 eur per night.

A decent hotel without meals in the Zona Hotelera usually starts at around 145 eur, whilst an all-inclusive resort starts at around 289 eur , whilst a luxury resort can cost more than 496 eur per room per night.

Prices during Christmas, New Year, the spring half-term holidays and Easter tend to be significantly higher.

Zona Hotelera

The Zona Hotelera is an approximately 22 km-long strip of hotels between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon.

However, being on the same street does not mean that all hotels offer the same holiday experience.

Northern Zona Hotelera

We recommend the area from Playa Langosta to Punta Cancún to people visiting Cancún for the first time.

The beaches here are more sheltered from the open ocean, the water tends to be calmer, and there are often better conditions for swimming with young children. The northern coast also tends to have fewer problems with seaweed than the open eastern side, though this can never be guaranteed.

The area around Punta Cancún is also the liveliest part of the resort. You can walk to restaurants, shops and clubs, so you don’t have to worry about taxis every evening.

As for specific hotels, we’d recommend:

• The Hyatt Ziva Cancún is situated right at the tip of Punta Cancún and has several beach areas. It’s expensive, but its location, facilities and family-friendly offerings make it one of the safest bets in the whole of Cancún.
• Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach offers an all-inclusive package, spacious rooms with balconies and a more sheltered beach. It’s ideal for families and travellers who want a high-quality resort whilst still having Punta Cancún within walking distance.
• We recommendthe Presidente InterContinental Cancún if you want to stay right by a quieter beach but don’t want to pay for an all-inclusive package. It often offers better value for money and a better location than the most famous resorts.

Central Zona Hotelera

On the east coast, stretching from Playa Gaviota Azul through Playa Chac Mool towards the La Isla shopping centre, you’ll find long beaches, strikingly turquoise water and the iconic views familiar from photographs of Cancún.

The sea here is more open, tends to have bigger waves and, in high season, more seaweed can accumulate on the beaches. The advantages include a wide choice of hotels, good bus connections and, around La Isla, a range of restaurants and shops.

• Le Blanc Spa Resort is one of the best choices for couples seeking a luxury, adults-only, all-inclusive experience. You’re mainly paying for the standard of service, the cuisine and the more tranquil atmosphere.
• Royalton CHIC Cancun is also adults-only, but has a more sociable and lively atmosphere. Choose this if you want to combine a resort experience, entertainment and proximity to nightlife.
• Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla is situated next to the La Isla shopping centre and is ideal for travellers who do not want an all-inclusive package. It has a rooftop pool and a wide selection of restaurants nearby. However, it is not directly on the beach; it’s about an 8-minute walk to the sea.

Southern Zona Hotelera

The southern part around Playa Delfines is quieter, less densely built-up and lies closer to the airport. The beaches are wide and are among the most beautiful in Cancún.

Expect open sea, bigger waves and a longer journey to Punta Cancún and the city centre. There aren’t many restaurants outside the hotels here, so an all-inclusive package makes more sense in this part of town.

A good choice for families is the Wyndham Grand Cancún All-Inclusive Resort.

It offers direct beach access, large swimming pools and generally more affordable prices than the most luxurious resorts in the north.

Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres

Costa Mujeres is the best choice for travellers who regard the resort itself as the main focus of their holiday.

The hotels here are newer, more spacious and often more luxurious than those in the Zona Hotelera. What’s more, the beaches here are significantly quieter, cleaner and generally more attractive.

The names can be confusing. Booking websites use both ‘Costa Mujeres’ and ‘Playa Mujeres’, even though it is essentially a single, contiguous resort area north of Cancún.

Do not confuse it with the island of Isla Mujeres or the more distant Playa Blanca.

There are generally no ordinary restaurants, shops or places of interest in the immediate vicinity of the resorts. The journey from the airport usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes, and you’ll need a transfer, taxi or Uber for day trips.

We therefore recommend almost exclusively all-inclusive options here:

• Atelier Playa Mujeres ranks among the best adults-only resorts in the area. We recommend it to couples seeking modern design, high-quality cuisine and tranquillity, rather than nightlife outside the hotel.
• Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres is a luxury adults-only resort. It is ideal for a romantic holiday and for travellers who do not plan to leave the resort at all.
• We recommendCatalonia Grand Costa Mujeres to families. It offers spacious rooms, a kids’ club and a wide selection of restaurants, whilst prices tend to be lower than at the most luxurious resorts.

Costa Mujeres is partly sheltered by the island of Isla Mujeres and may offer better conditions than the open coastline of the Zona Hotelera.

However, even here, no hotel can guarantee a sargassum-free sea.

Puerto Cancún

Puerto Cancún is a modern neighbourhood with a marina, a golf course and the Marina Town Centre shopping centre.

It lies between the city centre and the Zona Hotelera and offers an interesting compromise for a short stay, a business trip or a holiday without an all-inclusive package.

However, it is not a classic beach resort. You’ll have to travel to reach the most beautiful public beaches.

The best choice is the Renaissance Cancún Resort & Marina, which is situated right next to the marina and the shopping centre.

Cancún city centre

Accommodation in the centre of Cancún is several times cheaper than by the sea. You’ll find cheaper restaurants, supermarkets and the main ADO bus terminal here.

Nevertheless, we do not recommend it for a typical holiday. Every day you’ll have to commute by bus or Uber to the beach and return the same way in the evening.

This will partially offset the difference in hotel prices, but above all, you’ll waste a lot of time.

Staying in the city centre makes sense in three situations:

• you’re travelling on a very tight budget
• you’re planning lots of trips on ADO buses
• you need somewhere to stay overnight before an early morning or after a late evening bus

The Hotel Plaza Caribe is situated directly opposite the ADO terminal. The hotel is rather basic, and you’ll choose it mainly for its location.

The more comfortable Adhara Hacienda Cancún has a swimming pool, offers good value for money and is approximately 800 metres from the ADO terminal.

Accommodation near the airport

You should only stay near the airport if you have a very early departure or a late arrival. As a base for visiting Cancún, this area offers no advantages.

The most convenient option is the Hilton Garden Inn Cancun Airport, which is situated right next to the airport and provides a shuttle service between the hotel and the terminals.

If you’re arriving during the day, it’s usually best to head straight to your hotel. We describe your transport options in the section on transport from Cancún Airport.

Is all-inclusive worth it?

In Cancún, an all-inclusive package makes more sense than in a typical city resort. Restaurants in the Zona Hotelera are expensive, and in Costa Mujeres you often have no other options anyway.

We recommend all-inclusive

• in Costa Mujeres
• in the southern part of the Zona Hotelera
• for families with children
• for stays of at least 4 nights
• if you want to spend most of your days by the hotel pool and on the beach
• if you’ll be enjoying several meals, drinks and hotel activities throughout the day

Hyatt Ziva Cancun offers a good all-round all-inclusive package; for families, Wyndham Grand Cancun offers better value; and for adults, Atelier Playa Mujeres is recommended.

We recommend a non-all-inclusive hotel

• for a stay of 2 or 3 nights
• if you’re planning a day trip every day
• if you want to try out different restaurants
• if you’re staying near Punta Cancún or La Isla
• if you’ll be hiring a car and spending most of the day outside the resort

The Presidente InterContinental Cancún, right on the beach, and Canopy by Hilton La Isla, near restaurants and shops, offer a good location without the all-inclusive obligation.

Compare the difference between two specific hotels in practical terms. If the all-inclusive package for two people costs approximately 103 eur more per night, it may be worth it once you factor in the cost of food and drink. With a difference of around 207 eur , it’s only worth it if you’re actually going to make the most of the resort all day long.

What exactly is included in an all-inclusive package

The same term can mean something different at every hotel. Before booking, check in particular:

• whether all restaurants are included in the price
• whether you need to book dinner in advance
• whether there is an extra charge for premium alcohol
• whether the minibar and room service are included
• whether the package is valid until you check out of the hotel
• how the hotel calculates the price for children
• whether the hotel credit actually acts as cash, or is subject to further spending
• whether the price includes an airport transfer (rarely included)

Where to find calm waters and fewer seaweeds

If swimming in calm waters is your top priority, look for a hotel on the northern coast between Playa Langosta and Punta Cancún. The Presidente InterContinental and Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach are particularly well-located.

For long beaches, a more intense turquoise colour of the water and larger waves, choose the open coastline near Playa Chac Mool or Playa Delfines.

The presence of sargassum varies depending on the weather, currents and the day itself.

The highest risk is usually from May to October, but the seaweed can appear at any time. Luxury beach resorts clear the seaweed more quickly, but even they cannot guarantee clear water.

If sea conditions are a key consideration, book a room with free cancellation and check the latest photos, webcams and the Cancún weather section shortly before your trip.

How to choose the right room

Room names in Cancún can be misleading. The difference between two categories can be significant.

• ‘Ocean view’ means that the sea will be visible from the room in some way. The view may be side-on, distant or partially obstructed.
• ‘Oceanfront’ usually refers to a room facing directly out to sea. If the view is your main reason for booking, choose this category.
• ‘Lagoon view’ offers a view of the Nichupté Lagoon and often features beautiful sunsets. However, you won’t see the Caribbean Sea, and the rooms may be closer to the busy Kukulcán Boulevard.
• ‘Swim-up’ means direct access from the terrace to the pool. Check whether it is a private pool or a long pool shared with other rooms. Ground-floor rooms may offer less privacy and less sunshine.
• Club, Preferred or Diamond Club categories may include a better room, a separate section of the beach, a private lounge or higher-quality drinks. In some cases, however, you’ll only get a few minor benefits that don’t justify the extra cost.

When travelling with children, always enter their exact ages when searching. The hotel may allow four people to stay in one room, but all-inclusive for children may not automatically be included in the price initially displayed.

Compare prices for all hotels in Cancún

Taxes, fees and deposit

When comparing hotels, look at the total price for the entire stay, not just the price per night.

The following may be added to the price:

• Mexican VAT
• local accommodation tax
• municipal environmental charge
• a deposit for potential expenses
• airport transfer
• tips
• surcharges for certain restaurants or premium services

In Cancún, the environmental tax is usually charged per room per night and may be collected upon arrival. The amount changes regularly and may vary in Costa Mujeres.

International visitors to Quintana Roo also pay Visitax. This is not included in the hotel bill and must be paid separately via the official state Visitax portal.

In 2026, the fee is 293 mxn per traveller for the entire stay. It is therefore not charged on a daily basis.

Visitax is not collected on arrival or automatically at the hotel. It is not the same as the environmental fee charged by accommodation providers, nor is it the same as the federal taxes included in the price of your flight ticket.

You can pay it separately online at any time during your stay, but no later than before you leave Quintana Roo. Once you have paid, you will receive a QR code, which you should save to your phone.

Checks at airports are only carried out on a random basis. During our trip, nobody asked us to pay, and we flew out of Mexico without a Visitax check. If airport staff do check you and you do not have a QR code, they may direct you to make the payment before security.

Avoid unofficial websites that add their own service charge on top of the tax.

At check-in, most larger hotels require a credit card as a guarantee. The blocked amount may not be released until several days after departure.

Beware of timeshare presentations

At some resorts, staff may invite you upon arrival to join them for breakfast, a tour of the hotel or a presentation in exchange for a discount on an excursion or hotel credit.

In reality, this is usually a sales pitch for a membership or timeshare.

Instead of the promised hour, the presentation may take up a significant part of the day. If you are not interested in such a product, decline the offer right at the start. Attendance is not a condition of your stay or of using your paid all-inclusive package.

When to book a hotel

The most expensive and quickest to sell out are dates over Christmas, New Year, the February and March school holidays, and Easter. For these periods, we recommend booking a hotel with free cancellation at least 4 to 6 months in advance.

During the standard peak season from November to April, booking 2 to 4 months before your trip is usually sufficient.

Accommodation is usually cheapest in September and October. However, this is also the period with a higher risk of rain, tropical storms and hurricanes.

A practical strategy is to book a well-reviewed hotel with free cancellation and then check the price again later. If the same room becomes cheaper, you can make a new booking and cancel the original one.

Book a hotel in Cancún in advance

Where we’d stay

• First trip to Cancún: the northern Zona Hotelera; depending on your budget, the Hyatt Ziva, Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach or Presidente InterContinental.
• A luxury holiday for two: Atelier Playa Mujeres, if you’re looking for a quiet resort, or Le Blanc, if you want to stay in the Zona Hotelera.
• Holidays with children: Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres for a holiday spent within the resort.
• Non-all-inclusive hotel: Presidente InterContinentalright on the beach or Canopy by Hilton La Isla near shops and restaurants.
• Early morning ADO bus: Hotel Plaza Caribe, but only for the first or last night.
• Early morning flight: Hilton Garden Inn Cancun Airport, again for just one night.

For most tourists, the Zona Hotelera remains the best choice. Choose Costa Mujeres if you want to spend almost all your time at an all-inclusive resort.

Book accommodation in Cancún city centre mainly for the price or for its links to ADO buses, not as a cheap alternative to staying by the beach.
