Bacalar in a nutshell
Bacalar is a small town in southern Mexico, famous for the freshwater lagoon of the same name.
Thanks to its shades of turquoise and blue, it is nicknamed the ‘Laguna of Seven Colours’ and is one of the most beautiful natural sites on the entire Yucatán Peninsula.
Don’t expect a classic seaside resort with a long public beach. Most of the lagoon’s shores are occupied by hotels, restaurants and paid-entry swimming areas.

Why visit Bacalar?
People mainly visit Bacalar for swimming, peace and quiet, and spending time on the water. The town itself isn’t full of sights, and you can walk through the centre in 30 minutes.
The main attraction is the lagoon, which you can explore:
- on a boat or sailing trip
- by kayak or paddleboard
- by swimming from a hotel jetty
- at paid-for facilities known as balnearios
- in the natural Los Rápidos channel
Unlike the Caribbean coast, you don’t need to worry about sargassum in Bacalar.
The water is fresh, very calm and, depending on the depth and the seabed, changes colour from light turquoise to dark blue.
How much time should you set aside for Bacalar?
We consider 2–3 nights to be ideal. You’ll have time for one trip around the lagoon, a swim and at least one peaceful morning or afternoon by the water.
A stay of more than 3 nights will be particularly appreciated by those who want to relax in a lovely hotel right by the lagoon.
| Length of stay | What you’ll manage to do |
|---|---|
| 1 night | A quick swim and a visit to Bacalar town centre |
| 2 nights | Boat trip, a swim and Los Rápidos |
| 3 nights | A relaxing stay at a leisurely pace |
| 4 nights or more | Above all, relaxation at the hotel by the lagoon |
