The Azure Window was undoubtedly one of the most attractive sights in the whole of Malta. It is situated in Dwejra on the west coast of the island of Gozo.

This impressive spot has become a popular film location; you may well recognise the Azure Window from the first series of the hit TV series * Games of Thrones*. It was here, in fact, that the Dothraki wedding took place.

When did the Azure Window collapse?

On 8 March 2017, the Azure Window unfortunately collapsed, due to a severe storm and intense waves, which caused this limestone arch, over 500 years old, to collapse irrevocably into the sea.

The Azure Window was approximately 28 metres high and consisted of two limestone sections, one of which formed a pillar and the other the arch itself. 

The current alternative to the collapsed Azure Window is the smaller rock formation Wied il-Mielah, situated roughly 4 km to the north.

Viewpoint – admission and access

It’s still well worth a visit to the viewpoint today. You won’t see the Azure Window, but you can still admire the monumental cliffs and beautiful sunsets.

The viewpoint also offers a lovely view of the ‘Blue Hole’ natural pool, which we describe in more detail in the section onDwejra.

Access to the viewpoint is free, and there’s a comfortable, well-trodden path leading up to it from the car park, about 150 metres long.
