Dwejra Bay

The Blue Hole when the sea is calm

Just a few dozen metres from the area around theformer Azure Windowlies the stunning, photogenic Dwejra Bay, with its steep cliffs and breathtakingviews of the sunsets. The entrance to the bay is flanked by Fungus Rock, which adds to the beautiful and intriguing character of Dwejra Bay.

Find accommodation on the island of Gozo

However, apart from the bay itself, the Dwejra area conceals other attractions which are, in their own right, among the gems of the island of Gozo.

Inland Sea

The lagoon, surrounded by rocks and connected to the sea by a natural tunnel, is the main attraction in the Dwejra area.

You can swim in the calm waters of the lagoon, and there are also excellent conditions for snorkelling. The beaches around Inland Sea are either pebbly or concrete.

Beyond the ‘ 5 eur ’, you can enjoy a roughly 15-minute boat trip, during which you’ll sail through the tunnel out to the open sea. You’ll also be able to see the spot where the Azure Window once stood.

Blue Hole

From the viewpoint overlooking the ruins of the Azure Window, you’ll be treated to a view of a unique rock formation right by the shore, which forms a natural sea pool.

If the sea is calm, you can swim in the Blue Hole without any worries. The path from the car park is stony, but the distance is short (around 150 metres) and getting into the water is relatively easy.

However, when the waves are high, swimming in the Blue Hole is very dangerous.

Dwejra Bay and Fungus Rock

Dwejra Bay itself offers, above all, breathtaking views of the cliffs and a rock jutting out of the sea known as ‘Fungus Rock’.

It is not possible to swim in Dwejra Bay, as there is no access to the sea.

From the car park, it takes about 5 minutes on foot to reach the viewpoint overlooking the bay, following an easy path past the medieval Dwejra watchtower.

Diving

Dwejra is one of the most famous diving sites not only in Malta but throughout the Mediterranean.

In the vicinity of the Blue Hole, there are several breathtaking underwater tunnels, which are among the longest accessible to recreational divers in Europe.

In the small village, you’ll also find the Dwejra Dive orDive Smart Gozo diving schools, where you can book basic diving lessons for beginners (120 eur per hour) or even just a snorkelling trip (lasting 2–3 hours from 30 eur).

Accommodation in Dwejra

There is no accommodation in Dwejra itself. You’ll only find a few restaurants and snack bars here.

The nearest accommodation is in the village of San Lawrenz, 2 km away.

  • Gozo Dwejra Views – luxury apartments with breathtaking views of the coast
