The Ta’ Pinu Basilica is undoubtedly one of the most visited attractions on the island of Gozo. 

Whilst the building itself may not be one of the largest places of worship in Europe, it stands out strikingly against the open, unspoilt landscape of the island’s hilly centre.

The basilica, which is now a major place of pilgrimage, was not built until the 1930s, on the site where a smaller chapel had originally stood. It is said that it was here, at the end of the 19th century, that Karmni Grima, a resident of the nearby village of Għarb, spoke with the Virgin Mary, to whom this magnificent building is dedicated.

The basilica’s bell tower rises to a height of 61 metres.

The beauty of the church is enhanced by the area in front of the main entrance, with its ornate paving and magnificent mosaic walls.

If you’re not in a hurry, after touring the basilica, set off on the Way of the Cross, which begins directly opposite the basilica. In half an hour, you’ll find yourself on a hill, from where you’ll be treated to a beautiful view of this monumental basilica.

Admission and opening hours

The church is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 7.30 am to 5.00 pm.

During Masses, the basilica is open to worshippers only. Masses are held at the following times:

• Monday to Saturday – 7.30 am, 8.30 am, 6.30 pm
• Sundays and public holidays – 6.15 am, 8.30 am, 10.00 am, 11.15 am, 5.00 pm

How to get there

Ta’ Pinu is situated in the countryside near the village of Gharb, about 3.5 km from the town of Victoria. A road runs alongside the church.

Directly opposite the basilica is a free car park, which tends to be full, particularly at times of Sunday Mass.

There is also a bus stop by the church for the number 308 bus, which runs once an hour from Victoria.

The “Gozo Sightseeing” tourist buses on the purple route also stop at Ta’ Pinu Basilica. During the summer season, they run once every 45 minutes; in winter, once an hour. A day ticket for both tourist bus routes costs 20 eur. However, the ticket is not valid on public bus services. Timetables and further information: city-sightseeing.com//gozo.
