The oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur was built in 1873. Located right in Chinatown, its colourful ornate facade catches the eye from afar in the modern development.

Monumental gopuram

Dominating the temple is a 5-storey, 23-metre-high colourful gopuram, a typical gateway for South Indian-style Hindu temples.

The main prayer hall, with its many statues of deities and beautiful colourful ornaments, takes up almost the entire interior space.

Opening hours and tourist visit

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is freely accessible to all including tourists.

Admission is free.

You have to take off your shoes to enter the temple, other clothing is not so strict and you can normally enter in short pants or skirt.

If you don't want to leave your shoes unattended outside the temple, you can pay 0,50 myr for a shoe locker next to the entrance. You can only pay in cash.

It is open daily from 6:00am-8:30pm, and until 9:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • The dress-code is not strictly observed for temples as it is for mosques. You can also enter wearing short trousers
  • you can move freely throughout the interior
  • The tour of the temple takes 10-15 minutes
