Statue of Liberty Odaiba

Statue of Liberty Odaiba

On the artificial island of Odaiba, located in Tokyo Bay about 30 minutes by subway from the centre, you will find an extremely popular attraction among the locals.

It is an exact replica of the Statue of Liberty, the original of which stands in New York.

Symbol of French-Japanese friendship

A copy of the Statue of Liberty was erected on Odaiba Island in 1998 as a symbol of Franco-Japanese friendship.

In fact, the original Statue of Liberty in New York also originated in France and was a gift from the French people to America.

Originally, the replica of the statue was to stand in Tokyo for only a year, but due to its extreme popularity, the Statue of Liberty has remained there permanently.

The Odaiba Statue of Liberty stands on a popular pedestrian promenade filled with food stalls and views of Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge.

Rainbow colours during the night

I recommend visiting Tokyo's Statue of Liberty during sunset, which first illuminates the statue in a beautiful golden colour, and after dark the statue is lit up in alternating colours.

It gradually changes from blue, through purple and green to red.

The flame of the Statue of Liberty

Because the statue is holding a torch, a monument called the Flame of Liberty was built less than a 10-minute walk away.

The work was created by French architect Marc Couturier and the monument measures 27 metres tall.

It is located on the pedestrian promenade about 150 metres south of Daiba metro station ( see map for exact location).

How to get there

The Statue of Liberty on Odaiba Island can be reached by taking the Yurikamome Line subway.

This line runs from Shimbashi Station in central Tokyo, where you can transfer to JR trains and other subway lines (Ginza Line, Toei Asakusa Line).

The journey from the centre takes about 25 minutes.

There is also a Tokyo Cruise ferry dock near the statue.

Boats regularly sail to Asakusa Pier, which is located near the famous Sensoji Temple. For a detailed timetable and fares, visit suijobus.co.jp. You can buy a boat ticket at the ticket office on the promenade.

Hotels in the area

Odaiba may be outside the centre of Tokyo, but the subway line makes getting to the centre relatively quick.

Stay here if you prefer to live in an area by the water with the option of walking along the promenade and views of sunsets.

Right on the boardwalk overlooking the sea is the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba *****.
