Transfers and Terminal Layout at Istanbul Airport

Istanbul, Hagia Sofia

Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the largest hubs in the world and the main base of Turkish Airlines.

Unlike many large airports, orientation is relatively simple - the entire airport is one huge terminal.

It is divided into a section for:

  • international flights
  • domestic flights within Turkey

This way you don't have to take any trains or buses between terminals when connecting.

Terminal layout

The Istanbul Airport terminal is one of the largest in the world and the distances between different parts can be quite long.

It can take between 20 and 30 minutes to walk from the security checkpoint to the more distant gates.

Gates are divided by letters:

  • A, B, C, D, E, F - international flights.
  • G - domestic flights within Turkey

The entire terminal is arranged around a large central shopping and restaurant area.

Check-in counters

All check-in desks are located in one large departure hall.

This is divided into 15 sections of check-in desks.

  • International flights - left side of the hall
  • domestic flights - right side of the hall

There are only two main security checkpoints leading from the departure hall:

  • one for international flights
  • one for domestic flights

Transfer between flights

Transferring at Istanbul Airport is one of the easiest at the world's major hub airports.

You don't have to transfer between terminals and just follow the International Transfer signs.

You'll usually head straight from the plane to the transit area of the departure gates.

The real time from deplaning to the departure gate of the next flight tends to be:

  • 20 to 50 minutes.

However, the gate of the next flight is often not displayed until approximately 75 minutes before departure.

This means that passengers usually spend their time in a large central area with restaurants and shops.

How long does it take to transfer at Istanbul Airport?

As long as you have both flights on the same booking, any transfer the airline offers you is safe. Even if it's only 1 hour.

This is because airlines use what is called minimum connection time (MCT).

  • International → International: 60 minutes
  • International → Turkey: 90 minutes
  • Turkey → international: 75 minutes

If you are transferring on your own with two separate tickets, we recommend a minimum of:

  • 4 hours reserve

However, the actual time from getting off the plane to reaching the departure gate of the connecting flight often varies and we describe it in detail below from our own experience, which is extensive in the case of Istanbul.

We have made all types of connections at this airport, several times.

If you would like to connect through Istanbul airport on your own with two separate tickets, leave at least 3.5 hours reserve.

International <-> International

Thanks to Turkish Airlines, Istanbul is one of the most frequent connecting points between Europe/America and Asia/Africa.

International transfers are very frequent and the airport is well suited to them.

  • Security check
    • No - if you are flying from an EU country (e.g. Frankfurt - Istanbul - Tokyo)
    • yes - if you are flying from any other country
  • passport control - no
  • baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • real transfer time
    • 30 to 45 minutes - unless you are going through security
    • 45 to 75 minutes - if you have to go through security

International -> Domestic

If you are connecting from abroad to a flight within Turkey, the procedures vary depending on which Turkish airport is your final destination.

1. Flying to Adana (Cukurova), Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman, Denizli, Gaziantep, Izmir, Kayseri, Konya, Samsun, Trabzon

  • Security check - yes
  • passport control - yes
  • baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • real transfer time - 60 to 90 minutes

2. I am flying to any other Turkish airport

In this case you must leave the transit area and re-check your baggage.

  • Security check - yes
  • passport control - yes
  • baggage on transfer - you must collect it and re-check it in
  • real transfer time - 75 to 105 minutes

Domestic -> International

This process is slightly easier than the reverse and the same rules apply to arrivals from all Turkish airports.

  • Security check - yes
  • passport control - yes
  • baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • real transfer time - 60 to 90 minutes

Domestic <-> Domestic

This is the quickest and easiest form of transfer in Istanbul, with no checks waiting for you.

  • Security check -no
  • passport control - no
  • luggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • real transfer time - 15 to 30 minutes

Visa on transfer in Istanbul

Do I need a Turkish visa when changing planes in Istanbul? This is one of the most common questions we get asked.

No.

If you have both flights as one booking, you are not leaving the transit zone and therefore do not need a visa.

Sightseeing in Istanbul during a transfer - is it worth it?

There are many flights with long layovers via Istanbul. Is it worth visiting the city centre?

Free tour

Turkish Airlines, the largest airline operating at the airport, offers free tours of Istanbul for passengers on its connecting flights.

Those interested in this service should contact the "Tour Istanbul" desk at the airport, which is located near the transfer desk still in the transit control, but also in the public area of the arrivals hall. Passengers must fulfil several conditions:

  • The applicant must be travelling on international routes with a connection in Istanbul, which must be on one ticket, for example Prague - Istanbul - Hong Kong.
  • The transfer must be no longer than 24 hours.
  • Tour times range from 2.5 to 6 hours
  • All information can be found on the website: istanbulinhours.com

Visit on your own

If you don't qualify for a free tour of Istanbul, or simply prefer to explore the city without organized tours, these are my tips for a quick visit on your own:

If you have at least 7 hours between flights, a short visit to Bangkok may make sense.

Realistically though:

  • 1 hour drive to downtown
  • 1 hour return
  • return to the airport 2.5 hours before departure

Of the 7 hours, you will have approximately 3-4 hours of net time left.

If you're planning to use maps, order an Uber or deal with transportation during your layover, you can't do it without data.

Free hotel on transfer

If you are flying with Turkish Airlines and have a long layover at Istanbul Airport, you may be entitled to free accommodation in some cases.

Detailed conditions are described on the Turkish Airlines page.

If you don't qualify, I recommend booking 1 night at an airport hotel - the terminal is very busy all night!
