Segedunum

In the eastern part of the city, visit the archaeological site of the former Roman fortress of Segedunum.
This monument is located in the Wallsend district. As the name suggests, this is where the eastern end of the famous Hadrian's Wall was and where Hadrian's Wall Path begins.

The Segedunum Fort was one of the most important on Hadrian's Wall and was in operation between 122 and 400.
Museum, lookout tower and Roman baths
Today, all that remains of this fortress are archaeological excavations spread over an area of about 1 hectare.
You can walk among the excavations or look down on them from the top of the modern observation tower, which resembles an airport control tower.
About 350 metres from the main part of the site towards the footpath are also the excavations of the Roman baths, which you can see for free at any time from the footpath.
Less than 300 metres off the main road, Buddle Street, are the remains of Hadrian's Wall and a roughly 10 metre long exact replica of the wall as it looked in its true size.
Admission and opening times
Open daily from 10am-5pm (summer season) or 10am-3pm (winter season). During December and January, it is usually completely closed. However, the outdoor areas close as early as 30 minutes before closing time.
However, you can see all the outdoor excavations from behind the fence outside opening hours. It takes about 30 minutes to visit the small museum inside, which is dedicated to the history of Hadrian's Wall.
The price of an adult ticket is 7,75 gbp.
