Lumphini Park
Lumphini Park, also spelled Lumpini Park, is a well-maintained green park with lakes in the heart of modern Bangkok.
In places, it reminded me of New York’s Central Park: you can see skyscrapers through the trees, but the hustle and bustle of the streets recedes for a moment.
It’s a brilliant place for a morning run. During the day, I like to slip away into the shade here if I happen to be nearby. However, I wouldn’t travel all the way across Bangkok just for the park itself.
Allow 30–60 minutes for a typical visit. Below you’ll find what to do in the park, when to go and how to get there.

When to visit Lumphini Park
I’d prefer to go there early in the morning. The park fills up with joggers and people who’ve come to exercise before the heat of the day sets in. The main running circuit is about 2.5 km long.
During the day, you’ll appreciate the mature trees and the paths around the lakes. It makes for a pleasant break, perhaps whilst strolling through Silom. Don’t expect, however, that the Bangkok heat will be any less noticeable in the shade.
An early evening visit is also lovely. If, on the other hand, you fancy a longer walk, you can continue from Lumphini along the footbridge towards Benjakitti Park.
What you’ll see in the park
As well as ponds and jogging tracks, there are places to sit, exercise and go on pedalos. You may spot large monitor lizards by the water. Give them plenty of space and do not feed them.
I’d see Lumphini Park primarily as a place to take a breather from the city for a while. If you’ve got a packed itinerary in Bangkok, you don’t need to skip any other attractions to visit it.
Giant Malayan monitor lizards are also everywhere here, with hundreds of them in the park.
They’re harmless to people, though they often beg for food.
Admission and opening hours
Entry to Lumphini Park is free and no booking is required.
The park is open every day from 4.30 am to 10.00 pm. If you wish to visit by bike, the park management has set aside the time slot of 10.00 am to 3.00 pm for cycling.
How to get to Lumphini Park
The park is easily accessible from two directions:
- Si Lom MRT, Exit 1: Suitable for entering from the Silom area.
- MRT Lumphini, Exit 3: Suitable for the opposite side of the park.
- BTS Sala Daeng: You can reach the park via the footbridge over Rama IV Road.
Both MRT stations are on the blue line. If you need information on tickets or changing between the BTS and MRT, please refer to the section on the Bangkok Metro.
The exits near the park are listed directly by the MRT operator.
Where to stay if you want to go for a morning run in the park
In that case, staying near Lumphini does make sense. We stayed at AT EASE Saladaeng by AETAS on a quieter street near Silom. The advantages are the spacious rooms and the fact that both the park and the metro are within walking distance.
If you’d like a hotel directly opposite the park, take a look at SO/ Bangkok. Some rooms have views of the greenery; make sure to check the specific room type when booking. We compare other suitable neighbourhoods in the chapter ‘Where to stay in Bangkok’.
