My girlfriend was particularly looking forward to visiting Hacienda Oxmán. She knew about the cenote from a film, in which it was said to be a magical place whose waters would help couples conceive a child.

I was mainly expecting a quieter alternative to Ik-Kil. I was wrong about that.

Subjectively, it felt even busier here, but we’d still recommend a visit.

More unspoilt than Ik-Kil, but not any quieter

Oxmán resembles the Ik-Kil cenote, but feels more rugged. The most striking feature is the monumental tree roots that hang down to the water’s edge.

We found the site a little dirtier and the range of refreshments rather limited. The cenote itself, however, is interesting and less polished than Ik-Kil.

It has a more natural vibe.

The swing makes swimming a real experience

The biggest attraction is the rope swing. You hold on with your hands, swing out over the water and jump.

It’s great fun, but it’s also noisy and attracts loads of people. 

If you’re looking for a peaceful swim, Oxmán isn’t ideal. What’s more, getting into the water is a bit more challenging than at Ik-Kil or Suytun.

How we combined Chichén Itzá, Ik-Kil and Oxmán

We arrived at Oxmán after visiting Chichén Itzá and Ik-Kil.

The cenote is just outside Valladolid, so it’s easy to add to your return journey.

That very same afternoon, we drove on to the ferry terminal for Isla Mujeres and had no trouble catching the 7.00 pm ferry.

When travelling to Cancún, just remember that Quintana Roo is one hour ahead of Yucatán.

We wouldn’t have managed this route by public transport. With a hire car, you can adjust the time spent at each cenote according to the number of people and carry on straight away.

Admission fees and opening hours

Basic entry to the cenote costs 250 mxn and includes a life jacket, showers and a locker. Packages including swimming and food vary.

You can pay by card or in cash.

The cenote is open daily from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. We recommend checking prices on the official Hacienda Oxmán profile.

Allow approximately 45 minutes for the visit and a swim.

As with all cenotes, the price includes a compulsory life jacket and lockers for storing your belongings.

How to get to Hacienda Oxmán

Hacienda Oxmán is situated approximately 5 km from the centre of Valladolid.

• It takes about 15 minutesby car from Valladolid and approximately 40 minutes from Chichén Itzá. Parking is free
• A taxi from the centre of Valladolid costs around 350 mxn. Arrange a pick-up with the driver
• The journeyby bike takes about 30 minutes. Part of the route is on a poor-quality road, and we wouldn’t recommend this option in the midday heat
• There is no regularcolectivo service directly to the hacienda

If you don’t have a car, opt for a trip to the cenote

If you don’t have a car, the best option is a trip from Valladolid combining several cenotes.

However, we were unable to find any tours that included the Oxmán cenote. Most tours only include Ik-Kil and Suytun.

Ik-Kil, Oxmán or Suytun?

Ik-Kil	a comfortable stopover after Chichén Itzá, lovely swimming and the best facilities
Hacienda Oxmán	massive roots, a swing and a more rustic atmosphere
Suytun	an iconic photo on the stone jetty inside the cave

For swimming, we’d choose between Ik-Kil and Suytun. You can comfortably visit two cenotes in a single day, but we wouldn’t try to squeeze in all three.

Stay in Valladolid

As Oxmán is nearby, there’s no point in looking for a hotel near the hacienda. The cenote is only a 15-minute drive from Valladolid, where you’ll find much better restaurants and a livelier evening atmosphere.

We stayed at the Hotel Colonté and would choose its location again for Chichén Itzá and the surrounding cenotes.
