When someone says they’ve been ‘to Mount Etna’, they may simply have walked around the crater near the car park at an altitude of 1,900 metres, taken the cable car up to 2,500 metres, or spent six hours climbing to the active summit craters.

The difference is considerable – in terms of cost, the level of fitness required, and the experience itself.

For a first visit, we recommend the southern side, Etna Sud, near Rifugio Sapienza. Here you’ll find a cable car, off-road bus tours, the widest range of tourist services, and a bus service from Catania.

Etna reaches a height of around 3,400 metres, though the exact figure varies due to eruptions. It is the highest active volcano in Europe, and its summit area may be partially or completely closed, depending on the weather and volcanic activity.

How to visit Mount Etna

You can choose from four main options.

If you’re visiting Mount Etna for the first time and don’t want to undertake a demanding mountain climb, the best option is the combination of the cable car and off-road bus known as Tour 3000.

It costs just a 28 eur s more than the cable car alone and takes you significantly higher. However, it still does not involve a climb to the very summit of Mount Etna.

Etna Sud or Etna Nord

There are two main starting points for trips to Etna.

Etna Sud – Rifugio Sapienza

The southern side is suitable for most visitors.

• You can get here by car or bus from Catania
• You’ll find restaurants, equipment hire shops and the widest choice of excursions here
• The route is also suitable for families and travellers with no experience of mountain hiking

The downsides are higher prices and large crowds during the summer.

Etna Nord – Piano Provenzana

The northern side is quieter and the landscape here feels wilder. There is no cable car here; you continue to higher altitudes by off-road bus with a guide.

A typical excursion to an altitude of around 3,000 metres costs 69 eur and takes 2.5–3 hours. We recommend Etna Nord to travellers with a car who wish to avoid the busiest part of the volcano.

In summer, the seasonal Etna Connect bus may run to Piano Provenzana. Always check the service on the Ferrovia Circumetnea website. Outside the peak season, you’ll need to travel by car or on an organised tour.

Silvestri Craters

The cheapest and easiest way to walk through a volcanic crater is via the Crateri Silvestri, right next to the Rifugio Sapienza car park.

The short circular walk is suitable for children and those who are not particularly fit. You’ll see several craters formed during the 1892 eruption and, in good weather, the coastline around Catania.

• Altitude: around 1,900 metres

The Silvestri Craters are a good place for a quick stop-off on a road trip, but we wouldn’t consider them a full visit to Mount Etna. You won’t be able to reach the high-altitude volcanic landscape from here.

Cable car to 2,500 metres

The Funivia dell’Etna cable car starts at Rifugio Sapienza at an altitude of 1,923 metres and ends at approximately 2,500 metres.

A return ticket costs:

• Adult 54 eur
• Child aged 5 to 10 31 eur
• Children under 4: free

The journey itself takes about 15 minutes. Allow approximately 2 hours to explore the area around the top station and make your return journey.

The cable car normally runs every day from 8.30 am to 4.45 pm, with the last descent usually at 5.15 pm.

Tour 3000: cable car and off-road bus

The most popular excursion combines:

• A return cable car journey to 2,500 metres
• A ride on an off-road bus or snow vehicle up to approximately 2,800 metres
• A short guided walking tour to the highest area currently open

The whole trip takes about 2.5 hours and costs:

• Adult 82 eur
• Child aged 5 to 10 51 eur
• Children under 4 free

The trip is not physically demanding. The walking section is short, but you will be at high altitude, exposed to the wind and walking on loose volcanic ground.

The name ‘Tour 3000’ can be a little misleading. It does not involve climbing to the main summit or to the rim of the active summit craters. Furthermore, the maximum altitude reached varies depending on the current conditions.

Do I need to book a ticket online?

It is not necessary. The number of places is not usually limited.

You can buy a ticket on the spot or online via the official website. An online ticket allows for faster entry, but it is tied to a specific date and is not normally refundable in the event of bad weather. We therefore recommend purchasing it only once you have checked the forecast.

Ascent to the summit craters

The actual ascent to the summit craters is a separate high-altitude trek, which should not be confused with the standard Tour 3000 excursion.

The route usually takes 5–6 hours and leads over loose volcanic material with a significant elevation gain. Expect strong winds, cold temperatures and lower oxygen levels. Good physical fitness is essential.

You may only enter the highest permitted areas with a licensed mountain or volcanological guide.

The exact access boundary is not fixed – it varies depending on the volcano’s activity and the current regulations of the surrounding municipalities. A guide can therefore never guarantee in advance that a specific altitude will be reached.

The total price usually ranges from 120 eur to 160 eur.

One advantage is that most trips also include transport to and from Catania.

Cheaper offers in the range of 60 eur to 80 eur are very unlikely to include the cost of the cable car. Furthermore, you will then have to pay54 eur or 82 eur on arrival.

When choosing a trip, check:

• The highest planned altitude
• Whether the cable car and off-road bus are included in the price
• Whether you’ll be provided with a helmet and hiking boots
• Meeting point and time
• Cancellation policy in the event of bad weather
• Required fitness level and age restrictions

Hiking Mount Etna without the cable car

From Rifugio Sapienza, you can walk uphill alongside the cable car. The route to the top station is about 3.5 km long with an elevation gain of almost 600 metres.

The ascent takes 1.5–2 hours one way. The route is not technically difficult, but it follows loose terrain and part of the path runs alongside the cable car and the off-road bus route. In terms of views, therefore, this is not the most interesting walking tour on Mount Etna.

A better free hike is the Schiena dell’Asino, offering views of the monumental Valle del Bove. The starting point is on the SP92 road, a few minutes’ drive from Rifugio Sapienza.

• Time: 2.5–3 hours
• Elevation gain: approximately 250 metres
• No shade or water

When to visit Mount Etna

Trips to Mount Etna are organised all year round, but the current weather is far more important than the time of year.

The summit is often shrouded in clouds, and the cable car may be closed in strong winds. You should therefore allow for several possible days in your itinerary and choose a specific date based on the forecast.

The best conditions for hiking are usually from May to June and from September to October. Expect larger crowds in July and August. In winter, there is snow at higher altitudes and some hiking trails may require winter equipment.

What to take with you

Even if it’s over 30 °C in Catania, it may be just a few degrees higher up, with strong winds.

All year round, take:

• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes
• A warm layer
• A windproof jacket
• Sunglasses
• Sun cream
• Plenty of water

You do not need your own mountaineering kit for the standard Tour 3000. Jackets, boots and trekking poles can be hired at the cable car if required.

How to get to Rifugio Sapienza

By car

Rifugio Sapienza is situated about 35 km from the centre of Catania. The journey along the SP92 road takes approximately 1 hour.

The road is tarmac and, under normal conditions, you do not need a 4x4. In winter, check the road conditions and ensure you have the mandatory winter equipment before setting off.

There are several paid car parks around the lower cable car station. Rates vary depending on the specific zone; expect to pay a fee in euros per day and follow the on-site signage.

There is no petrol station near the cable car; fill up in Catania or Nicolosi.

By bus from Catania

There is one daily bus service operated by AST between Catania and Rifugio Sapienza.

• Departure from Piazza Giovanni XXIII in Catania at 8.15 am
• Arrival at Rifugio Sapienza around 10.15
• Departure from Mount Etna at 16:30
• Return ticket 6,60 eur
• Tickets can be purchased from the driver

A ticket purchased in advance does not guarantee a seat, so please arrive at the bus stop in good time. If you miss the return service, there are no further buses that day.

There is enough time between arrival and departure to catch the cable car or the Tour 3000. However, the bus arrives too late for most full-day hikes to the summit craters, which start in the morning.

Check the AST Sicilia website for the latest timetable and days when the service is not operating.

If you’re travelling by public transport, a visit to Mount Etna will take practically the whole day due to the fixed bus timetable.

Catania is the best option if you don’t have a car and want to use the bus or an organised tour. You’ll find the widest choice of restaurants here in the evening, and you can continue your journey around Sicily the next day.

Nicolosi is located about a 30-minute drive below Rifugio Sapienza. It’s ideal for travellers with a hire car who want to stay close to Mount Etna whilst still having restaurants and shops nearby.

Skiing on Mount Etna

In winter, skiing takes place on the southern side near Rifugio Sapienza and on the northern side near Piano Provenzana.

Operations are highly dependent on snowfall, wind and volcanic activity. The season is therefore irregular and in some years lasts only a few weeks.

What we’d choose

On a first visit, we’d go for the Tour 3000 from Etna Sud. It’s comfortable, doesn’t take too long and, compared to just taking the cable car, offers a 28 eur significantly better experience.

If you want to save money, explore the Silvestri craters and the Schiena dell’Asino trail.

The ascent to the summit craters is best suited to more experienced hikers who are in good physical condition, have suitable equipment and are prepared to adjust their plans according to the weather and the volcano’s activity.
