One of the few historical monuments not only in Ilulissat, but in the whole country, is the beautiful wooden church of the Zion Church near the centre.

The 1779 building is in fact the oldest church in Greenland and at the time of its opening it was the largest building in Greenland.

The church still serves its original purpose and is unfortunately only accessible during mass - otherwise the doors remain locked.

Despite this, we definitely recommend a trip to the church, as the area around it with its typical-looking Scandinavian houses and beautiful views of Disko Bay with its floating ice floes is one of the prettiest in the centre of Ilulissat.
