Prehistoric settlement by the glacier

Archaeological remains of all known Greenlandic civilisations have been found at the Sermermiut site.

Although it is not clear when exactly the settlement on the shores of the glacial fjord was established, there is evidence of settlement as early as the 7th century BC.

The settlement disappeared in 1850. At that time, the town of Ilulissat itself had existed for more than 100 years and, thanks to its better location by the harbour, gradually attracted all the inhabitants of Sermermiut.

Sermermiut today

Today you will only find an information board on the site of the former settlement.

Due to the harsh climatic conditions, there are no archaeological remains visible.

However, Sermermiut still remains an extremely popular destination for tourists and locals alike, as a comfortable wooden walkway (part of the blue hiking trail around Icefiord) leads to it, making it very easy to reach.
