Getting around Ilulissat

Ilulissat is a very small town that you can walk through without the slightest problem.
However, it does have its own bus service and a plethora of taxis that can take you quickly and at any time to the airport or the port.
On foot
Most tourists get around Ilulissat on foot. The greatest distance is from the airport to the city centre (4 km), while all the tourist attractions are right in the city centre, accessible from any hotel within a 15-minute walk.
Icefiord is the furthest away, which is about a 20-40 minute walk from the centre, but can only be reached by taxi anyway about halfway in the location of the dog town.
While walking, you will come across many dog farms in several places, especially in the southern part of Ilulissat - and especially along the start of the blue trail towards Icefjord.
By law, these dogs must be chained, except for puppies under 6 months old.
We have seen a few adult dogs without chains, but in any case these dogs are not aggressive or dangerous unless you touch them.
Taxi
A large number of taxis ply the streets of Ilulissat, which you can normally flag down with a wave.
At supermarkets, some hotels or at the port, taxis have their permanent stands where they wait for passengers.
If you are planning to go from your hotel to the port or airport, you will usually get a taxi included in your stay.
Hotels with airport transfers included
Prices and payment
You can always pay for your taxi ride with a card or cash in Danish Kroner.
The price is always calculated according to the taxi meter and the usual price for a trip from the airport to hotels in the centre is around 140 dkk.
The fare for a ride around Ilulissat (for example to Icefjord) is usually around 80 dkk to 100 dkk at most.
City bus
Although you will read on many different websites that there is no public bus service available in Ilulissat, there is in fact a fairly frequent public bus service running throughout the town.
It runs mainly to residential areas and is mainly for local residents.
For example, the bus does not go to Icefiord or the airport.
The line runs every day with an interval of 30 minutes. It runs from Monday to Friday from approximately 7:30 am to 9:00 pm and on weekends from approximately 9:00 am to 5:20 pm.
Timetables can only be found on the Ilulissat Bussi Facebook profile.
Ticket price is 10 dkk and can only be paid in cash to the driver.
