Hundebyen, or Dog Town, is an area south of the centre of Ilulissat towards the Icefjord, where dogs designed to pull dog sleds live.

Ilulissat, together with Sisimiut, is the main dog sledding centre in Greenland and hundreds of dogs live in the vast meadow.

In addition, small dog farms are scattered in other parts of Ilulissat.

However, the part of town called Hundebyen is easily accessible and you will pass right by the dog shelters on the public tarmac road.

The dogs are here 24/7 when there is no snow, from mid-April to the end of September, when there is no work for them. In winter they spend their time pulling dog sleds and are out of their dwellings most of the time.

All dogs must be chained by law. They are not dangerous to humans unless provoked, but they are not pets but working dogs. Please follow the rules and do not touch the dogs.
