In this chapter, you will learn how to get around Nessebar and to the nearest neighbouring resorts of Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas, Elenite, Ravda and Pomorie.

There is a very frequent bus service to all the places mentioned, running until late at night.

Within Nesebar itself – which you can easily walk across in 20 minutes – you can also travel by tourist road trains, and you can reach Sunny Beachcomfortably by ferry.

On foot

You can only get around the historic centre of Nesebar on foot. Access to the area within the city walls is restricted to local residents. You can walk through the historic centre in 15 minutes.

You can also easily walk from Old Nesebar to the new part of the town on the mainland. A wide footpath runs across the isthmus, along which the road passes, and past the windmill.

Public transport buses

Transport within Nesebar and the surrounding area is provided by Di Es Bus with its old orange buses.

Whilst buses on long-distance routes (including the service to Burgas) are almost always air-conditioned, these orange buses have no air conditioning and are often very crowded.

Routes and timetables

Timetables for all routes can be found on the websitediesbus.com/avtobusni-linii. Timetables are also displayed at the vast majority of bus stops.

However, only the departure times from the first stop on the route are ever shown. So if you are boarding somewhere along the route, you will need to calculate the actual departure time from that stop very roughly, based on how far away the first stop on the route is.

There are 10 bus routes available for travelling to Nessebar and the surrounding area.

• 1– from the north of Sunny Beach (Emona stop) along the entire length of the town via New Nesebar to Old Nesebar
  • Frequency – every 10 to 15 minutes
  • First buses – 5.45 am from Old Nessebar, 6.00 am from the Emona stop (Sunny Beach)
  • Last buses – 00:00 from Old Nesebar, 00:15 from the Emona stop (Sunny Beach)
• 2– from Action Aquapark through the whole of Sunny Beach to the Cherno More district and on to Old Nessebar
  • Frequency – every 60 minutes
  • First buses – 7.00 am from Old Nessebar, 6.30 am from the aquapark (Sunny Beach)
  • Last buses – 23:05 from Old Nessebar, 23:35 from the aquapark (Sunny Beach)
• 3– from the north of Sunny Beach (Emona stop) along the entire length of the town via New Nessebar to Ravda (does not go into Old Nessebar)
  • Frequency – 6 times a day
  • Last buses – 23:55 from Ravda, 00:00 from the Emona stop (Sunny Beach)
• 5– from Old Nessebar through the whole of Sunny Beach to the resort of Sveti Vlas
  • Frequency – every 40 minutes
  • First buses – 6.00 am from Old Nessebar, 5.50 am from Sveti Vlas
  • Last buses – 00:00 from Old Nessebar, 00:45 from Sveti Vlas (the last services only go as far as Sunny Beach)
• 7– from Sunny Beach bus station via New Nessebar, the resorts of Ravda and Aheloy to Old Pomorie (does not go to Old Nessebar)
  • Frequency – 7 times a day
  • First buses – 6.45 am from Sunny Beach, 7.30 am from Pomorie
  • Last buses – 21:40 from Sunny Beach, 23:00 from Pomorie
• 8– from Old Nessebar via the whole of Sunny Beach and the resort of Sveti Vlas to Elenite
  • Frequency – every 40 minutes
  • First buses – 6.15 am from Old Nessebar, 6.55 am from Elenite
  • Last buses – 23:05 from Old Nessebar, 23:50 from Elenite (the last services only go as far as Sunny Beach)
• 10– from Sunny Beach bus station via New and Old Nessebar, Ravda, Aheloy, New Pomorie (does not go to Old Pomorie), Burgas Airport to the South bus station in Burgas
  • Frequency – every 40 minutes
  • First buses – 6.10 am from Sunny Beach, 6.10 am from Burgas
  • Last buses – 21:00 from Sunny Beach, 22:05 from Burgas
• 22– from Sunny Beach bus station via New Nessebar (does not go to Old Nessebar), Aheloy and Kableshkovo to the South Bus Station in Burgas
  • Frequency – every 40 minutes
  • First buses – 6.20 am from Sunny Beach, 6.20 am from Burgas
  • Last buses – 21:20 from Sunny Beach, 21:20 from Burgas

Fares and tickets

Fares must always be paid to the conductor on the bus.

Once you’ve boarded, take a seat or remain standing and the conductor will come to you. Payment is always in cash only, but you do not need to have the exact amount.

Fares vary depending on the distance you travel.

• Nesebar – Sunny Beach, Ravda: 1 eur
• Nesebar – Sveti Vlas, Aheloy: 1,50 eur
• Nesebar – Pomorie, Elenite: 2 eur

Stops

Buses stop only at marked stops, which you’ll recognise at a glance.

Tourist train

The yellow line of the tourist road train runs to Old Nessebar; it also stops at the northern beach and has its terminus at the Pirates of the Caribbean Mini-Water Park. Here you can change to the blue line to the centre of Sunny Beach.

These trains are not only a tourist attraction but also a practical means of transport. This is because they run much closer to the beach than ordinary buses.

Admittedly, the ride isn’t particularly comfortable, but given that local buses aren’t air-conditioned, travelling on an open-top tourist train may ultimately be more pleasant.

Ticket prices

You pay for each journey 6 bgn. If you’re simply changing between trains, you’ll have to pay another fare of 6 lv.

Payment is made in cash only to the conductor, who will come to you and collect the money.

Routes and timetables

There are four different train routes operating in Nesebar and the neighbouring Sunny Beach.

They all run roughly once every 15 minutes and stop only at designated stations, but only if you tell the conductor where you are getting off.

The service runs from 10:00 to 24:00.

Ferries

There are three regular ferry routes operating from Nesebar, served by relatively small vessels.

  • Frequency – every 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how quickly the boat fills up
  • Operating hours – 10:00 to 22:00

• Sveti Vlas

  • Frequency – every 30 minutes
  • Operating hours – 10:00 to 20:00
  • Journey time – 10 minutes

Taxi

Mobile apps such as Uber or Bolt do not operate in Nesebar, but there are plenty of official yellow taxis on the streets.

Taxis wait at designated spots, but you can also hail one anywhere on the street without any trouble.

There are plenty of taxis on the streets at all hours of the day and night.

Fares in Nessebar and Sunny Beach are calculated using a taximeter.

• 4,50 bgn – price per kilometre
• 2,25 bgn – fare per minute of waiting (for example, at a traffic lights)

Taxis are therefore very expensive, and even the fixed fares to more distant destinations are high (for example, to Burgas Airport for 80 bgn).
