The most convenient and straightforward way to travel from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to central Jakarta is via the ride-sharing apps Grab or Gojek, or by regular taxi. However, fares from the airport to the city centre are up to twice as high as in the opposite direction.

When travelling to the airport by taxi or bus, make sure you allow plenty of time, as a journey that normally takes 50 minutes can take up to 90 minutes during rush hour.

Public transport is provided by a dedicated train line and numerous DAMRI bus routes serving various destinations across Jakarta.

Grab / Gojek

Using the popular taxi apps Grab and Gojek is very popular and convenient in Indonesia.

You always know the price in advance, and the amount is automatically deducted from the card you enter in the app. What’s more, both Grab and Gojek have clearly marked pick-up points in front of all terminals, where you can wait for a car or book a ride with the help of a member of staff if you haven’t downloaded the app yet.

The 10 best hotels in Jakarta

Grab / Gojek is usuallythe cheapestway to travel from the city centre to the airport when travelling with two or more people, with prices starting at 124 000 idr.

Conversely, the price from the airport to the city centre usually does not fall below 245 000 idr , so it will be cheaper to take the train or bus, even if there are two of you travelling.

Standard taxi

In Jakarta, taxi drivers charge by the meter.

When you exit any of the terminals, you’ll be approached by touts from various companies; however, they are all official employees and the fares for standard taxis are the same.

You won’t come across fraudulent taxi drivers at Jakarta Airport.

On the journey from the airport to the city centre and the National Monument, you shouldn’t pay more than 250 000 idr. Fares are the same when travelling from the city centre to the airport.

At the airport, you can book a taxi directly at the counter of one of the companies or at a booking machine at the taxi rank. You can also pay by card. When travelling from the city centre to the airport, you can book a taxi through your hotel or simply hail one in the street.

Train

Since 2017,a train has been running to the airport "Airport Rail Link" which is marked on maps as Line A.

The station is situated between Terminals 1 and 2. The only way to reach the station from any of the terminals is by the automatic airport shuttle, which runs free of charge every 13 minutes. The journey time from Terminal 3 to the station is approximately 6 minutes, whilst from Terminals 1 and 2 it is roughly 1 minute.

It is not possible to walk from the terminals to the train station.

Fare

Although this is part of the Jakarta commuter rail network, a special fare applies here and you cannot pay using the transport cards that are valid on other train, metro and bus services in Jakarta.

A single ticket to any station in the city centre costs 70 000 idr.

You can only pay by debit or credit card at the ticket machines. When travelling from the city centre to the airport, you can also pay in cash at the ticket office at the station. This option is not available when travelling from the airport to the city centre.

Timetable and route

The train runs to Manggarai station, where you can change to regular commuter services heading towards Old Jakarta or Gambir station.

To travel to the modern city centre, use Sudirman station.

During the day, services run every 30 minutes, and the journey to the city centre takes about 45 minutes.

DAMRI buses

You can also use DAMRI buses, which run across the whole of Jakarta to several destinations.

Individual routes usually do not stop anywhere en route between the airport and their final destination.

You’ll find bus stops in front of all terminals; they’re marked with signs reading ‘Public Bus ’.

You can buy tickets from ticket machines or directly at the ticket office at the bus stop. There are also ticket offices at stations in the city centre, where you must always buy your ticket before boarding the bus.

Fares can only be paid by card, not in cash.

TransJakarta buses

Since 2023, the SH1 feeder route of the TransJakarta bus system has also been running to the airport, offering by far the cheapest way to get there.

However, the route is primarily intended for staff. For example, you cannot buy a ticket at the airport, so unless you already have one of the transport cards from a previous visit to Indonesia, you will not be able to use this service.

Furthermore, the bus stop is not located at either terminal, but is situated on the main road between Terminals 1 and 2 (see map), from where you can reach the stop via the car park along an unmarked footpath.

The SH1 route runs to Kalideres Terminal in the western part of Jakarta, from where you can continue to the city centre on express buses 3 and 3F.

The fare is 3 500 idr for each route, so the total from the city centre is 7 000 idr.
