Transfers and Terminal Layout at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport
Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta operates three large terminals. The site is enormous and it is not possible to move comfortably between the terminals on foot; you can only do so by automatic train or shuttle bus.

Terminals 1 and 2 are the original ones; architecturally, they are semi-circular in shape and are rather outdated. All terminals are very well equipped with facilities.
After passing through security at any of the terminals, there is always plenty of seating available.
- Terminal 1 – the public area is located outdoors, but is covered by a roof. You will only be allowed access to the check-in desks upon presentation of your flight ticket or boarding pass.
- Terminal 2 – the security check is situated just before the departure gates, and you can access the check-in desks and restaurants beyond them without going through security.
- Terminal 3 – the most modern and largest terminal is divided into an international section (on the left) and a domestic section (on the right). The terminal is huge, but very easy to navigate.

Visa-on-arrival – where to buy?
Upon arrival from abroad, you must purchase a visa before going through standard immigration control.
A quicker option is to buy an e-visa whilst still at home, which allows you to avoid visiting the ‘Visa-on-Arrival’ counter. You can apply for an e-visa exclusively via the official website evisa.imigrasi.go.id. However, this option often doesn’t work because SMS messages containing the confirmation code do not reach certain international mobile numbers.
Visas are sold at special counters before you go through immigration control and cost 500 000 idr.
Payment can be made by card (for example, Revolut allows you to hold an account in Indonesian rupiah) or in foreign currencies at the following exchange rates:
- 32 eur
- 35 usd
- 45 sgd
- 50 aud
Once you have obtained your visa, you can proceed to the automated passport gate and do not need to visit the counter with a border official.
Connecting flights
Jakarta is a huge transit hub and you’ll often find yourself changing flights here.
The information below relates to guaranteed connections where both flights have been booked as a single reservation.
The vast majority of guaranteed connections take place within a single terminal. If you need to change terminals, you must always leave the transit area and make your way to the next terminal via the public area.
There are no buses connecting the individual terminals via the airside.
International -> Domestic
Upon arrival, you must purchase a visa (or apply for an e-visa online before departure), go through immigration and exit into the public area.
You will then take the escalators in Terminals 2 and 3 up to the second floor, where you will go through security to the departure gates. Terminal 1 does not handle international flights.
- Luggage– in some cases, it will be transferred automatically (for example, on Garuda flights), but sometimes you will need to collect it and check it in again
- Average transfer time– 70 minutes in Terminal 2 or 85 minutes in Terminal 3 (may be longer if you need to collect your luggage)
- Immigration control– yes
- Security screening– yes
If you need to change terminals, after passing through immigration and collecting your luggage (if necessary), follow the signs for the “SkyTrain” and take the automated train to the next terminal. In this case, the average transfer time increases to approximately 90–120 minutes.
Domestic → International
On arrival, follow the signs for ‘International Transfer’. If you do not have a boarding pass for your connecting flight, there are special transfer desks in both Terminals 2 and 3 where you can obtain one.
In some cases, your luggage will be automatically transferred. This applies to connecting flights with Batik Air, Lion Air, Garuda and SkyTeam alliance partners.
Even if your luggage is transferred automatically, you must always leave the transit area; in the public area of Terminals 2 and 3, take the escalators or lift to the 2nd floor and go through immigration and security checks.
- Luggage– in some cases it will be transferred automatically, but sometimes you will need to collect it and check it in again
- Average transfer time– 60 minutes at Terminal 2, or 75 minutes at Terminal 3 (may be longer if you need to collect your luggage)
- Immigration– yes
- Security screening– yes
If you need to change terminals, after passing through immigration and collecting your luggage (if necessary), follow the signs for the “SkyTrain” and take the automated train to the next terminal. In this case, the average transfer time increases to approximately 90–120 minutes.
Domestic <-> Domestic
After disembarking from the aircraft, proceed through the dedicated ‘Transfer’ corridor. At the end of this corridor, you will find escalators or shuttle buses that will take you directly to the departure gates.
There is no security check at Terminals 1 and 2, whereas there is one at Terminal 3.
- Luggage– will be transferred automatically
- Average transfer time– 30 minutes at Terminal 2 and 45 minutes at Terminal 3
- Immigration control– no
- Security check– not required in Terminals 1 and 2; required in Terminal 3
International <-> International
On arrival, please go to the dedicated transfer desk if you do not yet have a boarding pass for your connecting flight.
If you do have a boarding pass, you can simply follow the ‘Transfer’ signs. You do not need to leave the transit area.
Take the escalators up to the 2nd floor, where you’ll find yourself in the departure gates area.
- Luggage– will be transferred automatically
- Average transfer time– 20 minutes at Terminal 2, or 30 minutes at Terminal 3
- Immigration control– no
- Security check– not required in Terminal 2; required in Terminal 3
Transfer on your own
If you are planning a transfer in Jakarta with two separate bookings, allow plenty of time. In all cases, you must always leave the transit area and check in again, even if you are travelling with hand luggage only.
The airport is large, and delays or even flight cancellations are very common, particularly on domestic flights.
The ideal layover time is 4–5 hours, but you’d be best advised to spend a full day in Jakarta and explore the city.
Travelling between terminals
All terminals are separate from one another and it is not possible to walk comfortably between them.
There are two ways to travel between the buildings.
SkyTrain
The automated airport train serves all terminals as well as the station for the train running from the airport to central Jakarta.
SkyTrain stations are always on the second floor. It takes about 3 minutes to walk from the terminals to the SkyTrain station.

- Frequency – every 13 minutes
- Operating hours – 6.00 am to midnight
The journey time between individual stations is always approximately 2 to 3 minutes. The longest journey is from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1, which takes around 9 minutes.
Shuttle bus
You’ll mainly use the buses at night, when the automated train isn’t running. The bus always stops directly in front of the terminal on its departures level (so from arrivals, you’ll always need to go up to the second floor; at Terminal 1, you’ll need to walk about 150 metres).
There are two types of bus: a paid service ( 5 000 idr), which, however, takes a roundabout route via various administrative buildings, and a free service, which takes a more direct route.

- Frequency – every 15 minutes (every 20 minutes at night)
- Operating hours – 24/7
The timetable is as follows:
- Terminal 1 -> Terminal 2 – approx. 20 minutes (the bus also stops at the staff car park)
- Terminal 2 → Terminal 3 – approx. 5 minutes
- Terminal 3 → Terminal 1 – approx. 15 minutes (the bus also stops at the cargo terminal)
- Terminal 3 → Terminal 2 – approx. 35 minutes (the bus stops at the cargo terminal, at Terminal 1 and at the staff car park)
The stops are located at the following points:
- Terminal 1 – near Departures 1A
- Terminal 2 – in the centre of the terminal near the automated train station on the 2nd floor (departures)
- Terminal 3 – in the centre of the terminal on the 2nd floor (departures)

Here you will probably have to collect your luggage and check it in again.
However, both airlines use Terminal 3, so it's definitely possible to make the transfer without any problems.

Hi, if Saudia arrives on time, you can make the connection. If you can't make it, there are plenty of flights from Jakarta to Bali and you can get tickets a few hours before departure for good prices.

The queue for immigration check tends to be 30-60 minutes and then the train transfer to terminal 2, even with any wait, will be around 20 minutes.
I'll arrive at CGK with Singapore Airlines at T3 at 9:55 am and I have a scheduled domestic flight to Bali (Air Asia) departing at 3:55 pm. Is it doable?
Yes, 6 hours is a sufficient margin. Personally, a similar transfer took me around 2 hours in total.
