Transfers and Terminal Layout at Bangkok Don Mueang Airport

Modern Bangkok

The airport is effectively served by one long building divided into 2 terminals. Orientation inside the terminals is easy and distances are shorter than at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Honestly - if you've ever changed planes at a larger Asian airport, DMK will rather pleasantly surprise you.

Even so, arrive at the airport ideally 2.5 hours before your flight. In the early morning and evening, security lines can be as long as 30-40 minutes.

Which terminal?

The terminals are interconnected and it only takes a few minutes to walk between them.

  • Terminal 1: international flights
  • Terminal 2: domestic flights within Thailand

👉 If you are departing very early in the morning, it may make sense to stay overnight right by the airport.

Transfer between flights

Connections are usually well and clearly organised. If you have flights on one ticket, you usually don't have to leave the transit zone.

On the other hand, if you have two separate flights booked separately, you often have to go all the way out and check in again, even if you have online check-in in advance and are travelling with hand luggage only.

International <-> International

You don't have to leave the transit area when connecting internationally if you have both flights on the same booking.

  • You do not go through passport control
  • Passes through security
  • Baggage will be transferred automatically

It takes approximately 40 minutes to walk through the entire airport from one end to the other. This is also a realistic transfer time between two flights.

Queues at transfer security are usually short and the organisation is clear.

International -> Domestic

If you are continuing on through Thailand (e.g. to Chiang Mai, Phuket or Krabi), you need to go through immigration first.

However, there is no need to leave the transit area completely - follow the signs for domestic departures.

  • You remain in the transit area - you go through immigration control for transfer passengers
    • queues at immigration can vary from 10 to 30 minutes
  • going through security - clearly marked and for transit passengers only
    • good organisation, queues usually up to 15 minutes
  • luggage is automatically transferred - this is unusual compared to other transfers of this type in the world

Realistic transfer time in my experience is 45-60 minutes depending on the length of the immigration check and the distance to the departure gate.

Are you flying onwards in Thailand?

If you're just planning the next leg of your trip, it may come in handy:

Domestic -> International

If you are continuing on from a domestic flight within Thailand on an international flight, you must exit the transit area and go through security and immigration.

Some airlines will automatically reload your luggage in this case. Always check with your point of departure whether or not you will need to collect your baggage on transfer.

Usually this type of transfer will take 35-80 minutes depending on the length at immigration and the distance from the departure gate.

Domestic <-> Domestic

If you are transferring between two domestic flights within Thailand, you do not need to leave the transit area.

There is also no security check and your luggage will be transferred automatically.

Usually this type of transfer will take 15-20 minutes depending on the distance from the departure gate.

What to do for a long transfer?

Is it worth leaving Don Mueang DMK airport on a long layover to go to Bangkok?

For me, it only makes sense if you have at least 8 hours of clear time between flights.

From my own experience, I have described a short itinerary for a quick visit to Bangkok:

Small but important recommendations

DMK is a compact airport, but peak times tend to be significant - especially early in the morning when most low-cost flights depart.

If you're combining multiple flights on separate bookings, allow more time than would be necessary on a single itinerary. Ideally at least 3-4 hours.
