Hotel reviews The Standard, High Line - top views and fun

Liberty Corner Room

The visit to New York in October 2025 had two main objectives - a stay at The Plaza Hotel and a flight in the new Lufthansa Allegris Business Class.

But it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to try another very well-known and popular hotel: the designer The Standard, High Line ****. Very popular with celebrities and the young thanks to the Le Bain disco and The Standard Grill restaurant, as well as for its breathtaking views.

Reservation and price of stay

The Standard, High Line is part of the Hyatt chain, on whose website I also booked my stay to collect points for the loyalty program.

However, you can also book a stay through traditional portals like booking.com for very similar prices.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and chose a higher room category Liberty Corner King with views of two sides - the Hudson River and Manhattan.

In total, my stay with breakfast came out to 2 700 usd including all taxes and fees.

It may seem like a very high price at first glance, but compared to other hotels of similar category in New York, it is rather average.

Location right above the High Line

One of the main draws of this hotel is its location.

Arriving from Newark EWR Airport, first take the train to Penn Station, then the blue subway to 14 Street, followed by a less than 10-minute walk. The entire trip from the airport to the hotel takes about 45 minutes including the wait for the train.

Literally in the middle of the hotel is the famous High Line, a 1.5-mile-long park converted from a former railroad.

Just steps from the hotel, you can also visit another popular park on the man-made Little Island.

If you travel around New York City by public transportation, the nearest subway stations are:

  • 14 St - Blue subway lines A, C, E
    • 0.3 miles (7 minute walk)
    • Local and express buses stop here.
  • 8 Av - grey metro line L
    • 0.3 miles (7 minute walk)
    • local and express services stop here
  • 14 St - red metro lines 1, 2, 3
    • 0.5 miles (10 minute walk)
    • local and express services stop here
  • 14 St - orange metro lines F, M
    • 0.5 miles (10 minute walk)
    • only local services stop here!

Arrival and check-in

Check-in is very quick and the reception area already impresses with its interesting design.

There are two of us in the room and we each get our own chip card.

Design room - a fabulous view and an impractical bathroom

Our room Liberty Corner King looks great at first glance, with interesting design features such as the black tiles in the bathroom or the wooden panelling on the walls and ceiling.

Even at night, the fabulous view catches the eye, thanks to the floor to ceiling windows among other things!

The hotel may only have 16 floors, but it's set away from high-rise buildings, so there's nothing to obstruct the view.

We can see the Hudson River, the distant Downtown with the tallest skyscraper , One World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building from a side window.

Unfortunately, we only enjoy the view on the first night in the dark. The next days the weather is terrible and we can see almost nothing.

The room itself is airy and spacious, the bed wide and comfortable.

But it soon becomes clear that the room is not very practical.

There is very little storage space, practically just one desk with a sofa and a "closet" behind a curtain with several hangers. Otherwise, nothing.

But the least practical part of the room for us is definitely the bathroom. Design-wise, it looks quite interesting, but there is a complete lack of any separation between the bathroom and the rest of the room - there is neither a door nor a curtain.

The shower is only overhead and it is quite difficult to regulate the water temperature.

In addition, the shower is again not separated from the rest of the bathroom in any way, so after showering the whole bathroom is completely wet and the water sticks to the floor for several hours.

The toilet is in a separate room from the bathroom.

Pluses Cons
✅ Great view ❌ No door to the bathroom
✅ Wide bed ❌ No shower screen
✅ "Cool" atmosphere ❌ Little storage space
✅ Large minibar selection ❌ Air conditioning control far from the bed

Minibar and other room amenities

In the hallway of the room we find a well-equipped minibar.

The fridge is stocked with soft and energy drinks, beer and we can also find a bottle of Moët.

Outside the fridge there are small bottles of spirits, water and small sweet and savoury snacks.

The prices of all items are attached in the photo below.

Air conditioning

The room is equipped with powerful and quiet air conditioning, but it cannot be controlled from the bed, only from the control panel in the hallway.

Rooftop bar with disco and steakhouse

Views and designer rooms aren't the only attractions at The Standard, High Line.

Le Bain Disco and Bar

Le Bain Disco with its outdoor rooftop terrace and bar is one of New York's most popular spots, not just with the young, celebrities and influencers.

Located on the top 18th floor of the hotel, Le Bain offers breathtaking views of Manhattan.

It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On other days, the following hours:

  • Wednesday and Thursday - 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
  • Friday - 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Saturday - 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday - 2:00 p.m. to 0:00 a.m.

Reservations are not required to enter the dance floor or bar, but if you want to sit at a table, especially on weekends and Fridays, we recommend making a reservation through the official website: lebainnewyork.com

The Standard Grill Restaurant

Then, on the ground floor of the hotel lobby, you'll find the famous The Standard Grill, one of the most highly acclaimed steakhouses in all of New York City.

The restaurant has indoor space and a large outdoor patio directly below the High Line.

Hours of operation are as follows:

  • Thursday through Saturday - 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Sunday through Wednesday - 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.

For lunch and dinner, we recommend making reservations on the restaurant's official website at standardhotels.com/the-standard-grill.

Breakfast à la carte

As always, I paid extra for the breakfast package.

The Standard, like many luxury hotels in New York (including the famous The Plaza), does not offer a buffet breakfast, but only an à la carte menu.

Even so, adding the breakfast package to the total room rate is worth it. Usually the price is higher by about 30 usd per night for a 2-bed room, so about 15 usd per night per person.

For breakfast, you can choose from any menu item + cold + hot drink, which normally works out to around $25-$30 per person.

The breakfast menu includes Turkish eggs, eggs florentine, burritos, croque madame, sandwiches, toast, English breakfast or omelettes.

You won't find sweet food or fruit on the menu at all.

The setting is pleasant - breakfast is served in the indoor restaurant or the conservatory, where there is also a bar that is open until late.

Portions are neither large nor small. Just enough to fill you up, which I actually welcome. Personally, I definitely prefer the buffet breakfast, but at the same time, I always overeat terribly!

The quality of the food and presentation is excellent, I have nothing to fault that.

After breakfast you always have to ask for the bill and sign for it. The restaurant then has to bill it through the front desk, but you don't pay anything except for any tip, which is not included. Tips can only be paid in cash.

Services at the hotel

In general, other services are quite limited. For example, you will not find any children's play areas or even Laundry Service.

In the room you can only use two bathrobes for free, borrow an umbrella and take slippers.

Fitness centre

On the 17th floor, you can use a fairly large fitness room with several treadmills, elliptical trainers and weight training equipment for free.

The bonus is the great views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

Luggage storage

You can store your luggage for free at the front desk in case you arrive early in the morning and your room isn't ready, or conversely, in case you're not leaving New York until the evening after check-out.

Shop

On the ground floor, just behind the reception desk, you can use the small shop with souvenirs, clothes or jewellery.

Conclusion

The Standard, High Line is a hotel for those who:

  • ✅ Love nightlife and rooftop discos
  • ✅ Love great views from their room
  • ✅ Like staying in trendy "instagram" hotels

Conversely, a hotel will not appeal to travelers who:

  • ❌ Like maximum comfort and privacy (no bathroom door!)
  • ❌ Prefer quiet or traditional luxury
  • ❌ Looking for cheaper hotels with better value for money

Our tips for alternative hotels

If you're looking for something with a similar vibe, but either even more luxurious or conversely a slightly more affordable alternative in the Chelsea / Meatpacking / High Line area, I've added a few recommendations:

For the discerning - luxury hotels

  • Equinox Hotel New York ***** - A modern hotel in Hudson Yards with a world-class spa, a pool with a view, and one of the best fitness centers in NYC. One of the most expensive and highest rated hotels in the city.
  • The High Line Hotel **** - Quiet boutique hotel. While The Standard relies on glass and design, The High Line Hotel is the opposite - historic house, wood, classic, monastery garden vibe.

Cheaper but stylish.

  • Chelsea Pines Inn *** - Smaller hotel, simple, clean, pleasant, breakfast included. Ideal for those who prefer to invest in food and experiences rather than accommodation.
  • Hotel Alameda Highline **** - Modern style, bar, rooftop, great atmosphere and one of the best "budget-cool" options near the High Line.
