Vietnam Military History Museum
The Vietnam Military History Museum is a large museum of military history and technology on the western outskirts of Hanoi.
I would recommend a visit particularly to those interested in military history, aeroplanes and tanks. Due to its location, you’ll need to plan a separate trip and allow plenty of time for travel.
I’d choose the centre of Hanoi as a base for your stay. I’ve had a good experience with the WECOZY HANOI – Railway Side apartments, which have their own kitchenette. Due to their proximity to the railway tracks, do expect some noise from trains.

Is it worth visiting?
If you’re interested in military history, expect a large, modern complex with indoor exhibitions and an outdoor collection of military equipment. I’d set aside at least two hours for the tour; including travel time, it’ll take about half a day.
For a short stay in Hanoi, I’d opt for the city centre. For history buffs, more practical stops include Hoa Lo Prison or Thang Long Citadel, which you can easily fit into a walking tour.
What you’ll see in the museum
The indoor exhibitions cover Vietnam’s military history from ancient times to the conflicts of the 20th century. They feature historical artefacts, documents, film footage and modern audiovisual presentations.
A significant part of the collections consists of aeroplanes, helicopters, tanks and artillery. Well-known exhibits include MiG-21 fighter jets and T-54B tank number 843.

How to get to the museum
The new address is Km 6+500 Dai Lo Thang Long, in the western part of Hanoi.
The museum is no longer located at 28A Dien Bien Phu, near Hanoi’s Flag Tower. When planning your journey, select the new site on Dai Lo Thang Long.
- Grab or taxi: the easiest option to get directly to the site. Check the fare and estimated journey time in the app based on your location and current traffic conditions.
- Bus E07: runs from Long Bien terminal through the city centre towards Smart City and stops near the new museum. A ticket costs 10 000 vnd; from the stop, you’ll still need to walk a short distance to the entrance.
