Thong Nhat Park

Thong Nhat is a large urban park featuring Bay Mau Lake, situated south of Hanoi’s historic centre. Here you’ll find mature trees, paths running alongside the water and plenty of space for a long walk or a run.

I went to have a look and I liked the park. It’s just a bit off the main tourist trail, so it depends on how much time you have in Hanoi.

Would you like a park right next to your hotel? The Hôtel du Parc Hanoï is situated on the north-western edge of the park. It’s also convenient for travelling by train: the main railway station is about a 10-minute walk away. We compare other options in the article ‘Where to stay in Hanoi’.

Is it worth visiting the park?

I’d recommend it particularly for longer stays, if you want to take a break from sightseeing or are looking for somewhere to go for a morning run. Allow about 45–60 minutes for a leisurely stroll.

The park is also quite close (about a 20-minute walk) to Hanoi’s main railway station.

It’s lovely to visit in the morning or later in the afternoon, when locals come here to exercise and stroll around the lake.

If you only have a day or two in Hanoi, I’d recommend Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter. I’d only add Thong Nhat if you have time to spare or are staying nearby.

Admission and opening hours

  • 💰 Admission: free.
  • 🕒 Opening hours: the public park is open 24 hours a day.

I’d recommend coming for a walk during daylight hours.

How to get to the park

If you’re coming from the city centre, the northern side of the park, near Tran Nhan Tong Street, is the best route.

  • On foot: from the southern shore of Hoan Kiem Lake, allow about 25–30 minutes.
  • By bus: Route 11 runs along Tran Nhat Duat Street on the eastern edge of the Old Quarter. Head towards Công viên Thống Nhất and get off at the terminus by the park. A ticket costs 10 000 vnd.
  • By Grab: enter ‘Thong Nhat Park’ as your destination and select the drop-off point on the Tran Nhan Tong Street side.

You can combine your walk back to the city centre with a visit to Quan Su Pagoda or Hoa Lo Prison. It’s about a 20-minute walk to them from the northern edge of the park.
