Quan Chuong Gate

Quan Chuong

Quan Chuong, also known as Ô Quan Chưởng, is the last surviving gate of Hanoi’s former outer fortifications. It stands on the north-eastern edge of the old quarter and is well worth a quick stop whilst strolling through the surrounding streets.

Allow about 5–10 minutes to have a look around and take a few photographs.

Accommodation nearby: The Hanoi Little Town Hotel, about a 5–10-minute walk from the gate, is a good choice for exploring this part of the Old Quarter. You can find further tips in the article ‘Where to stay in Hanoi’.

What you’ll see at the gate

The gate was built in 1749 and has since undergone several repairs and renovations. The lower section features three arched passageways, above which stands a former watchtower.

What’s particularly interesting is how it’s nestled amongst the houses and shops. The surrounding area is still used for everyday city traffic, so when taking photos, be prepared for motorbikes passing by.

Admission and opening hours

  • 💰 Admission: viewing the gate from the street is free.
  • 🕒 Opening hours: the outdoor area is accessible 24 hours a day.

Where to find the gate

The gate stands at the eastern end of Hang Chieu Street, where it meets O Quan Chuong Street. You’ll also find it marked on maps as ‘Old East Gate’.

You can easily combine a visit here with other places in the old quarter:

  • Dong Xuan Market – about a 5-minute walk.
  • Bach Ma Temple – about a 5-minute walk.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake – about a 10–15-minute walk to the northern shore.
