Beer Street (Ta Hien)

Beer Street is a famous beer street in the historic centre of Hanoi. You’ll find it on Ta Hien Street; it’s liveliest around the junction with Luong Ngoc Quyen, also known as Bia Hoi Corner.

In the evening, low plastic stools and tables are set out here, music plays from the bars, and crowds of people flow between the establishments. It’s very touristy and noisy, but it’s definitely worth a visit to get a taste of the Old Quarter’s evening atmosphere.

Fancy walking back to your hotel in the evening? La Siesta Classic Ma May is about 3–5 minutes’ walk from Beer Street. You’ll find more tips based on location and budget in the article ‘Where to stay in Hanoi’.

What to expect and how much does a beer cost?

The most typical experience is sitting on a small stool right by the street. Bars and simple beer halls alternate here with venues offering food or loud music.

Part of the local beer culture in Vietnam is ‘bia hoi’, a light, fresh draught beer. On Beer Street, however, you’ll also find common bottled brands, and the selection varies from place to place.

As a rough guide, expect the following prices:

  • Bia hoi, small glass: approx. 10,000–20 000 vnd
  • Standard local bottled beer: approx. 25,000–50 000 vnd

Drinks may be more expensive in bars. Check the drinks menu before ordering: a low price for a small glass of bia hoi does not necessarily mean the same price for a large glass or a bottle of beer.

It takes about 15–20 minutes just to walk down the street. But if you sit down for a drink, you can easily spend most of the evening here.

Best time to visit

I’d go between 7 pm and 10 pm to soak up the atmosphere. The place is usually busiest at the weekend. During the day, Ta Hien feels considerably more ordinary.

Where can you find Beer Street?

Look for Ta Hien Beer Street on maps, or the junction of Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen. It’s about a 5–10-minute walk from the northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake.

You can easily combine a visit here with a stroll through the Old Quarter. Bach Ma Temple is just a few minutes’ walk away, and Dong Xuan Market is about 10 minutes’ walk away.

It’s best to walk straight to the street. If you’re travelling by Grab, bear in mind that you may have to walk the last bit due to crowds or traffic restrictions.

Where to stay near Beer Street?

For a night out, it’s handy to stay within walking distance. When booking, I’d choose a room facing away from the street, as noise can also come from the surrounding bars and clubs.

  • La Siesta Classic Ma May – a more comfortable hotel on Ma May Street, about a 3–5-minute walk away. It also offers family rooms and a spa. The basic ‘Superior’ category has no windows.
  • Hanoi Little Town Hotel – a simpler option with en-suite bathrooms on Hang Luoc Street, about a 10-minute walk from the main nightlife area.
