Dumbo is a neighbourhood in Brooklyn, New York, situated between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. The name is an acronym for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass.

The neighbourhood is famous for offering one of the most iconic views of the Manhattan Bridge. The area has become one of New York’s leading arts and leisure districts.

Washington Street: the best view in New York?

New York has countless viewpoints, with the most popular ones being on top of skyscrapers.

Personally, however, I was most taken with the iconic Washington Street in Brooklyn, with its famous view of the Manhattan Bridge pylon.

Walks along the waterfront

Dumbo has a brilliant promenade along the East River, which continues all the way to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The waterfront is lined with old brick buildings, which have gradually been transformed into a modern neighbourhood full of art studios, cafés and restaurants.

From the riverbank, there’s a lovely view of both bridges – the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges – as well as the Manhattan skyline in the background.

How to get there

Dumbo is a 5-minute walk from Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the neighbourhood is also easily accessible by the Underground.

You can use the following underground stations:

• York St(approx. 250 metres from Washington Street) – orange line F
• High St(approx. 300 metres from Washington Street) – blue lines A, C
