West Bow (Victoria Street)

Every city has its one most famous street, and for Edinburgh it's West Bow.

Edinburgh's most photogenic street

West Bow, better known as the bottom of the iconic Victoria Street, is one of Edinburgh's most beautiful and photographed places. This gracefully curving lane connecting the Grassmarket to the uptown area is a popular destination for tourists, photographers and Harry Potter fans alike.

The colourful house facades, stone arches and small shops with shop fronts like something from another century create a fairytale backdrop that is not to be missed.

Although the street is short and takes no more than a few minutes to walk down, it's one of the places where almost everyone stops, and visitors often come back more than once - during the day for the shopping, in the evening for the atmosphere.

Inspiration for Harry Potter's Cross Street

West Bow is often cited as one of the main inspirations for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter world.

Although J.K. Rowling has never officially confirmed that this particular street was a direct precursor, the atmosphere of the place suggests so - the winding street full of bookshops, magic shops and mysterious passageways looks like something out of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter fans will find several themed shops, such as The Great Wizard or Museum Context, which sells official collectibles and has a decidedly "Hogwarts" interior design. There are also post owls, magic wands and replicas of death relics.

Shops, cafes and atmosphere

West Bow and Victoria Street are not only photogenic, but also a great place to shop and relax. The street is lined with small independent shops selling everything from Scottish design to delicatessens, vintage clothing and designer souvenirs.

Interesting businesses along the route:

  • The Red Door Gallery - local art, posters and gifts,
  • John Kay's Shop - antiques and classic Scottish engravings,
  • Hannah Zakari - handmade jewellery and design,
  • Oink - famous fast food with slow roasted Scottish pork,
  • Maison Bleue - a French-Scottish restaurant with great views,
  • At the top, the street widens out into Victoria Terrace, where there are great views down to the colourful houses and surrounding rooftops. In the evening, the lamps around the area light up and the street takes on an almost cinematic feel.

History and origin of the name

West Bow Street was originally the main access route from the west into the old town. Its characteristic curvature ("bow" in English) gave it its name. In the past it was part of the Royal Route to Edinburgh Castle and served as a market place and a place of public executions.

The street took its present form during 19th century redevelopment, when Victoria Terrace was added to the upper part, but the lower West Bow retains its medieval character with narrow pavements and house fronts at several levels.

Access and orientation

The West Bow is located between the Grassmarket and the top of the Royal Mile, specifically at George IV Bridge. Its central location makes it easily accessible on foot from all major points in Edinburgh.

  • From the centre (Waverley Station): approximately 10 minutes on foot via Cockburn Street,
  • From the Royal Mile: walk down over George IV Bridge and enter Victoria Terrace,
  • From Grassmarket: the street starts at the right corner of the square where you will find the iconic colourful houses.

The street is steep and cobbled, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Tips and attractions

  • The best time to take photos is early in the morning (fewer people) or around sunset (soft light + illuminated houses).
  • West Bow is a great stop on the way to or from the castle - just a few minutes walk.
  • For Harry Potter fans, we recommend combining it with a visit to The Elephant House, where Rowling supposedly started writing the first books.
  • In nearby Candlemaker Row you'll come across a statue of Bobby, Edinburgh's most famous dog, who spent 14 years on his master's grave.
