Palace of Holyroodhouse

Holyroodhouse Palace is located at the very end of the Royal Mile, just below Arthur's Seat. It is the official Scottish residence of the British monarch and one of Edinburgh's most important historic sites.
The palace is still a functioning royal facility - formal receptions, audiences and ceremonies are held here during the monarch's stay in Scotland.

Architecturally, the palace is a magnificent example of Baroque and Renaissance architecture.
Its history dates back to the 12th century, but its current appearance dates mostly from the 17th century. A visit is an unforgettable experience not only for history buffs, but also for anyone interested in the life of the British royal family.
A place with a dramatic history
The Palace has witnessed many dramatic events in Scottish history. The most famous episode is the reign of Mary Stuart, who stayed here in the 16th century. It was in her chambers that her secretary David Rizzio was brutally murdered in 1566, allegedly in front of her eyes - the room is now open to the public.
As well as the private chambers and state rooms, visitors can also explore the Great Gallery, with portraits of legendary Scottish kings, or the chapel of the former Holyrood Abbey, now an impressive ruin adjacent to the palace. The Royal Gardens are also open in the summer, perfect for a quiet stroll.
