Plaza del Socoro
Plaza del Socorro is one of the main squares in the centre of Ronda. Don’t expect a dramatic view like the one from the Puente Nuevo. It is, above all, a lively town square with restaurants, cafés and several interesting buildings.
I’d set aside about 10 minutes for the tour itself. You’ll spend much longer there if you sit down at one of the outdoor cafés. The square has the best atmosphere in the evening, whilst the morning is better for taking photos.

What you’ll see in the square
- Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro – a church with two towers, which dominates the square. It looks older, but its current appearance dates back only to the 1950s. The previous church was destroyed during the Civil War.
- The Hercules Fountain – the statue in the centre of the square is not merely decorative. Hercules, the two lions and the columns represent the coat of arms of Andalusia.
- Círculo de Artistas – you’ll recognise the building on the opposite side by the red letters C and A. In 1918, a meeting was held here at which the green and white flag and the coat of arms of Andalusia were adopted.
The square is freely accessible throughout the day. There is no admission charge for the church, but its opening hours are subject to the schedule of services, so it is not advisable to rely on them when planning your visit.
Where to find Plaza del Socorro
The square is situated in the newer part of the city centre, on the route between the pedestrian shopping street Carrera Espinel and Ronda’s most famous sights.
It takes about 3 minutes to walk to the Plaza de Toros bullring and 5 minutes to Puente Nuevo. I wouldn’t plan a specific trip here, but you can hardly miss it whilst strolling through the city centre.
Accommodation near the square
This part of town is a practical choice for accommodation. You’ll be close to the sights, restaurants and the bus and train stations.
The Hotel Maestranza enjoys a good location between the Plaza del Socorro, the bullring and the Puente Nuevo.
