Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor

The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor is the most important church in the historic centre of Ronda. It stands in the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, on the site of the former main mosque, and its current appearance combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

I popped inside whilst strolling through the old town.

In my view, that’s how a visit works best – not as the main destination of the day, but as a short stop between the Puente Nuevo, the city walls and the Arab baths.

What you’ll see inside

The church took more than two centuries to build, which is why its individual sections differ quite markedly. Alongside Gothic arches, you’ll see the Renaissance nave, richly decorated altars and a massive wooden choir.

Part of the mihrab – the niche indicating the direction of prayer towards Mecca – has been preserved from the original mosque. The church tower also stands on the foundations of the former minaret.

The tour includes access to the church rooftops. From there, you can enjoy views across the historic centre of Ronda, the city walls and the surrounding countryside.
