Right in the centre of the town, in several places you will discover the well-preserved archaeological site of the ancient town of Serdica (often spelled "Serdika").

"Serdica" used to refer to the Roman city built on the site where Sofia stands today. The oldest archaeological sites date from around the 3rd century BC.

Three excavation sites

In the immediate vicinity of Serdika station you will discover three archaeological areas:

1. Right by the metro exit (see map) - the excavation sites are accessible from 7:00 to 22:00 for free and are also visible 24/7 from the square and the street.
2. Near St. Joseph's Cathedral (see map) - you can walk through this area 24/7 for free.
3. Under Independence Square (see map) - the covered section with the museum is located directly under the Largoarea
   • Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00 (closed on Mondays)
