Getting to Brunei Darussalam

Brunei

Brunei lies on the northern coast of Borneo and has a land border only with Malaysia.

The most frequent connection to Brunei is by plane, but buses from Malaysia and Indonesia also run to the capital Bandar Seri Begawan and ferries also run to the Malaysian city of Labuan.

By air

Air travel is the most common and cheapest form of transport to Brunei. There is only one international airport in the small country , Brunei BWN.

There are two low-cost airlines that fly to Brunei, and these are the cheapest airlines to buy tickets with. Both also offer connecting flights beyond Asia, so you can use them when travelling from destinations other than those listed below.

Average one-way fares from Manila, Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia or Cebu Pacific range between 70 usd and 100 usd.

Two traditional network airlines also offer slightly more expensive one-way tickets with prices starting from 150 usd for one-way tickets to nearby countries:

If you're heading to Brunei from Europe, America or Australia, generally the cheapest connections are to Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta or Manila and from there with low-cost airlines Cebu Pacific or Air Asia.

Royal Brunei Airlines often offers cheap fares from Dubai.

Ferry Brunei - Labuan

The Malaysian island of Labuan can be reached daily by ferry from the port in Brunei's Muara district.

The boat departs from the Serasa wharf (see map), which can be reached from the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan by DART taxi for around 25 bnd.

An alternative is to take bus 33 to Muara town, from where buses 37, 38 and 39 run to the centre. Each ride costs 1 bnd and the frequency of the buses is about once an hour.

The current timetable can be found at mpabd.gov.bn. Click on the tabs "Information -> Ferry Schedule".

Buses to Malaysia and Indonesia

There are also regular international bus services to the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

However, booking online or generally finding out detailed information is very difficult.

Malaysia

Currently (in 2025) regular buses operate from Bandar Seri Begawan on the following routes:

  • Limbang - Lawas - Kota Kinabalu

In the other direction, in the direction of Miri or Bintulu, you can use the DAMRI bus service 3 times a week, which continues to Inodnesia.

  • Miri - 25 bnd
  • Bintulu - 35 bnd
  • Sibu - 47 bnd

For example, the instagram profile of the Brunei tour operator Al Baraka provides up-to-date information.

An alternative transport option to own cities to the western part of Malaysia is as follows:

  • Local bus from Bandar Seri Begawan to Seria (approx. 1x per hour, price 2 bnd)
  • Taxi from Seria town to the border crossing (approx. 20 bnd)
  • Walk across the border
  • Grab from the border crossing to Miri (approx. 60 myr)

Indonesia

The price is 110 bnd and the journey time is about 16 hours.

There are two companies operating on the route, but it is not possible to book tickets online with either company:
