The cable car will take you from the historic centre of Sarajevo to the forests on the slopes of Trebević in just under 10 minutes.

Even during the ride, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of Baščaršija and the whole Sarajevo valley; once at the top, you can also visit the disused bobsleigh track from the Winter Olympics.

In clear weather, the cable car is one of the best short trips in Sarajevo. Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for the journey from the centre, the ride, the views and a brief visit to the bobsleigh track.

Where the cable car goes

The lower station is situated in the Bistrik district at an altitude of 583 metres. The approximately 2.2 km-long route ends at the Ramo Biber station at an altitude of 1,160 metres, and the journey itself takes around 7 to 9 minutes.

The cable car does not go to the summit of Trebević. The highest point of Mount Sofe is 1,629 metres, and from the top station it is approximately a 1½ to 2-hour walk each way to reach it.

The original cable car opened in 1959 but was destroyed during the Siege of Sarajevo. The new gondola lift began operating in 2018.

What to see at the top station

Right by the station, you’ll find a viewpoint overlooking Sarajevo, a few benches and refreshments. The views are usually best in clear weather and later in the afternoon, when the sun illuminates the city below.

Even in summer, it can be significantly cooler and windier up here than down in Sarajevo, so it’s a good idea to bring at least a light extra layer.

Olympic bobsleigh track

Trebević’s biggest attraction is the disused bobsleigh and luge track from the 1984 Winter Olympics.

It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to walk from the top station to the upper section of the track. Admission is free and you can walk freely along the concrete track, which is covered in graffiti.

The entire track is over 1 km long and runs steeply downhill. Most people therefore only walk the upper section and return the same way. If you want to walk the entire track and then climb back up to the cable car, allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

The concrete is often uneven and slippery after rain. Cyclists also use the track in summer, so be sure to look around before entering blind bends.

Hiking on Trebević

Several signposted hiking trails continue from the top station. Shorter walks lead to viewpoints and mountain restaurants, whilst the longer route continues all the way to the summit of Sofe.

Please stick to the paths and signposted trails. During the war, Trebević lay on the front line, and you should still avoid straying from the usual routes due to the possible presence of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Trebević is particularly suitable for a short day trip from the city. For longer mountain hikes or skiing, head to Bjelašnica instead.

Where is the summer bobsleigh run?

You’ll find the modern Alpine Coaster at the Sunnyland complex, not at the top station of the cable car.

The cable car does not go directly to Sunnyland. The complex is situated in a different part of Trebević, and it is more convenient to travel there by car or taxi.

Cable car fare

Standard fare for passengers not resident in Bosnia and Herzegovina:

• Return ticket – 30 bam
• Single ticket – 20 bam
• Children under 7 travel free
• Bicycle transport – 4 bam one way

As a return ticket costs only 10 bam more than a one-way ticket, it is good value for most passengers. A one-way ticket is mainly worthwhile if you are planning to walk down.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office at the lower station, where both cash and card payments are accepted.

Opening hours

In summer, the cable car usually runs:

• Monday 12:00–21:00
• Tuesday to Sunday 9.00–21.00

Outside the peak season, operating hours are gradually reduced, and in winter the cable car usually runs from 9.00 to 17.00.

Operations may be suspended due to strong winds or routine maintenance. You should therefore check the opening hours for a specific day on the official Sarajevo Cable Car website, particularly before travelling on a Monday or outside the summer season.

How to get to the lower station

The lower station of the cable car is located on Hrvatin Street in the Bistrik district.

It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk there from Vijećnica, and 10 to 15 minutes from the centre of Baščaršija. The final stretch is quite steep.

The nearest tram stop is called Vijećnica. There is no public transport service directly to the cable car.

Parking is difficult in the narrow streets nearby, so there’s no point in driving to the lower station. If you want to visit more places on Trebević, including Sunnyland, the Pino Nature Hotel or Brus, it will actually be more practical to drive straight up the mountain.

For a standard visit to Sarajevo, we recommend staying down in the historic centre and simply taking the cable car up to Trebević.
