The colourful Vijećnica, standing on the banks of the River Miljacka, is one of Sarajevo’s most striking buildings.

It is often still referred to as the National Library, but today it once again serves primarily as a town hall, a reception venue and an exhibition hall.

The building was constructed between 1892 and 1896 in a pseudo-Moorish style inspired by Islamic architecture from Spain and North Africa. The initial design was created by Karel Pařík; following a dispute between him and the client, the project was taken over by Alexander Wittek and completed by Ćiril Iveković.

From town hall to library and back again

Vijećnica originally served as Sarajevo’s town hall. After the Second World War, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina moved into it.

During the Siege of Sarajevo, the building was burnt down in August 1992 after being hit by incendiary shells. Around 2 million books and other documents were destroyed along with it.

The extensive reconstruction work lasted until 2014. Today, the city council meets here once more, and exhibitions, concerts and ceremonial events are held here.

Is it worth going inside?

Yes, the most impressive part of the Vijećnica is hidden inside. The main reason to visit is the octagonal atrium with its glass dome, colourful arches and monumental staircase.

You can also explore the ceremonial hall, the town council chamber and exhibitions dedicated to the history, destruction and reconstruction of the building. The exhibitions themselves are more of a bonus; the main attraction remains the interior architecture.

Tickets can be purchased on the spot without booking. Some rooms may be closed on rare occasions due to city council meetings or special events.

Location and best views

Vijećnica stands on the eastern edge of Baščaršija. It is a few minutes’ walk from the square with the Sebilj, and about 10 minutes’ walk from the Latin Bridge along the river.

The best place to photograph the entire façade is from the opposite bank of the Miljacka or from the Šeher-Ćehajina ćuprija bridge. The lower station of the cable car to Trebević is less than a 5-minute walk away, so you can easily combine both places into a single itinerary.
