Skywalk Hallstatt, also known as Welterbeblick, is a 12-metre-long viewing platform on the slopes of the Salzberg.

It is situated approximately 360 metres above the rooftops of Hallstatt and offers views of the historic centre, Lake Hallstatt, Obertraun and the surrounding peaks.

The viewing platform itself is a short stop. Allow approximately 15 to 30 minutes for taking photographs and enjoying the view.

It therefore makes more sense to combine a visit to the Skywalk with a trip to the Salzwelten, a walk through the Hallstatt Valley or a hike up from the village.

How to get to the Hallstatt Skywalk

The most convenient option is the Salzbergbahn funicular. The lower station is located in the southern part of Hallstatt, near the coach terminal and car parks P1 and P2. The journey to the upper station takes approximately 3 minutes.

From the top station, take the panoramic lift and cross the bridge to the Rudolfsturm restaurant. The Skywalk is situated directly below it. Both the cable car and the access route from the top station to the viewing platform are wheelchair accessible.

The second option is to walk up the winding path, which starts at the lower station of the cable car.

The climb takes about an hour, but it is a steady uphill walk. Sturdy footwear is recommended. In winter, the route may be closed due to snow or ice.

Admission and cable car fare

There is no separate ticket for the Skywalk. If you walk up, there is no charge for the viewing platform. If you take the cable car, you only pay the fare.

• Return cable car ticket for an adult: 29 eur
• Return cable car ticket for a child aged 4 to 15: 14 eur
• Children under 4 years old: free

If you’re already planning to pay 29 eur for the cable car, it’s worth considering a combined ticket to Salzwelten.

For an adult, a visit to the salt mine costs just a little 20 eur . You should then allow at least 3 hours for the whole programme.

Opening hours

The cable car’s operating hours are as follows:

• 1 August to 24 October: 9.00 am–6.00 pm
• 1 October to 6 January 2027: 9.00 am–4.30 pm

The times shown are for the last descent. Operating hours may vary depending on the season, weather or maintenance, so I recommend checking the official website before you travel.

When is the best time to visit the Skywalk?

The Skywalk is best enjoyed when visibility is good. If the Salzberg is shrouded in low-lying clouds, you’ll pay for the return cable car journey 29 eur and you may see almost nothing from the main viewing point.

Before buying a ticket, therefore, check whether you can see the Rudolfsturm and the upper part of the slope from Hallstatt.

Most visitors arrive in the late morning and early afternoon.

It tends to be quieter on the first cable car of the morning or towards the end of operating hours. If you’re taking the last cable cars, make sure you allow plenty of time for the return journey.

How much time do you need?

• Skywalk including the cable car journey: approximately 45 to 60 minutes
• Walking up and down: approximately 2 to 3 hours
• Skywalk combined with Salzwelten: at least 3 hours
• Skywalk, Salzwelten and a walk through the Hallstatt Valley: about half a day

If you only have a few hours in Hallstatt, choose between the Skywalk and the salt mine depending on the weather.

On a clear day, the view offers a better experience; in rainy or overcast conditions, Salzwelten is the better option.

Parking at the Skywalk

The Salzbergbahn does not have its own visitor car park. The nearest car park is P2, from where it is approximately a 1-minute walk to the lower station.

From car park P1, allow about 7 minutes’ walk. Car parks P3 and P4 are approximately 30 minutes’ walk away.

Particularly at weekends in summer, parking may be unavailable throughout Hallstatt, so it is much more reliable to travel by bus or a combination of train and boat.

Where to stay near the Skywalk

Staying overnight in Hallstatt will allow you to catch the first cable car of the morning, avoid the main rush of day-trippers and save yourself the hassle of an early morning arrival or searching for a parking space.

The Fenix Hall Boutique Hotel Hallstatt boasts the most convenient location, situated approximately 200 metres from the Salzbergbahn lower station. From there, you can also walk to the centre of Hallstatt in about 10 minutes.

A quieter option is Im Echerntal on the southern outskirts of Hallstatt. The cable car is about a 10-minute walk away, and the accommodation also offers on-site parking.
