This viewpoint offers the famous view of Hallstatt that you’ll recognise from postcards and social media.

Hallstätter See, the Protestant church, the harbour, the historic houses and the surrounding mountains all fit into a single shot.

You’ll find it on maps under the names Classic Village Viewpoint, Panoramic Viewpoint, Fotopoint Hallstatt.

It’s about a 5-minute walk from Marktplatz, and admission is free.

Is the viewpoint worth a visit?

If you want to take just one classic photo home from Hallstatt, this is the place to go.

The photo spot is situated on the pavement by Gosaumühlstraße and offers the famous view along the shore towards the Protestant church.

Admittedly, it’s the most touristy spot in Hallstatt, and if you arrive later than 10 am, there’ll be crowds of people here.

But even so, it’s simply such a classic spot that, in my opinion, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The viewpoint is popular for a reason: the view is simply stunning!

When’s the best time to visit the viewpoint?

You’ll encounter the fewest people early in the morning or in the evening, once the day-trippers have left. During the day, groups waiting to have their photo taken may form on the narrow footpath.

• Early in the morning – fewer people and the houses on the opposite bank gradually coming to life in the light
• Mid-morning – the best light over the village, but also the busiest time
• Evening – fewer organised groups and pleasant light after sunset

In calm weather, the houses and the church are reflected on the water’s surface. In fog or low cloud, the surrounding mountains may be partially obscured, but the centre of Hallstatt itself usually remains visible.

The photo spot is situated on a public pavement and has neither a ticket office nor set opening hours.

How do you take the best photo?

Use your phone’s main camera. Although the ultra-wide lens will capture more of the lake and the mountains, the Evangelical church and the houses will appear too small in the shot.

It’s worth taking both a horizontal photo of the entire panorama and a vertical shot focusing on the church. Simply walk a few metres along the pavement and try out different compositions featuring the church, houses and boats.

The space at the viewpoint is narrow. If you want to use a tripod, come early in the morning or in the evening.

Please be considerate of local residents

The viewpoint is situated directly in front of residential properties. Stick to the public footpath, do not enter private property and do not block the way for others.

When taking photographs early in the morning or in the evening, please speak quietly. Noise from visitors is one of the biggest problems in this part of Hallstatt.

Where can you stay near the viewpoint?

Staying overnight in Hallstatt will allow you to visit the viewpoint early in the morning or in the evening, when most day-trippers have already left.

The closest option is Pension Sarstein , situated in a quieter part on the northern outskirts of Hallstatt. The rooms and flats have balconies overlooking the lake.

Right on the Marktplatz, you can choose the Seehotel Grüner Baum. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the viewpoint, and some rooms face the lake.
